Suspicious Device Found on Railcar in Decatur

A suspicious device was found on a rail car containing hazardous materials at the Daikin American plant on State Docks Rd in Decatur. Schools within a 5 mile radius have been evacuated and voluntary evacuations at businesses and residences are under way. Several schools in Lawrence and Limestone counties have also been evacuated. Numerous agencies on scene and numerous agencies involved in evacuations.

After all of the hoop-la, evacuations, extra shifts called in, etc... it was a package containing 1-2 kilos of marijuana. Officials say it has probably been there since the rail car was in Mexico.

You don't bring dogs around railcars containing HF unless you expect the dog to have a very short and cruel life, or no sense of smell.

They were justified in the response. HF is an extremely active chemical / acid; it makes sulfuric acid look like diluted vinegar. It's up there with Chlorine gas in terms of danger.

Definitely not complaining about the response. I work in Public Safety. I was just saying that it turned out to be a harmless situation. In today's times, the response was justified and appropriate.
