• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB CB Radio. It has an onboard SWR meter. In addition I have an Astatic PDC1 external SWR Meter. I have matched the readings between the 2 and they are pretty much on par. below are the readings with both.

With the Astatic PDC1 meter attached to the radio:
The Astatic meter reads an SWR of:
Channel 1 - 1.49
Channel 40 - 2.51

With the Astatic PDC1 meter attached:
The radios SWR meter reads:
Channel 1 - 1.45
Channel 40 - 1.82

Without the Astatic PDC1 meter attached:

On the onboard SWR meter reads:

Channel 1 - 1.43
Channel 40 - 1.10

The 2.51 reading with the meter attached is what concerns me. No matter how much adjusting I do to the antenna that number remains high

So which meter reading do you guys suggest I go with?

By the way the radio is installed in my car.

When in doubt (your dilemma) tune to the channel you use until you have changed locations. If that channel is AM-19 you know you are GTG at present.

My U-980 tends to be optimistic versus the A-meter. Could be bad jumper, faulty meter, etc.

Once you are in a wide open field far from any trees or structure as best you can arrange (with doors shut and a new jumper), let ‘er rip.

I used to set my Chrysler at the house. Then I’d run a good forty miles or more — not a pain, a pleasant drive, I rebuilt that car for it — and unfold that 9’ whip at a VERY wide shoulder on an overlook free of obstructions.’

I’d take my time and make notes: under best conditions, readings were . . .

I have mine installed in a 1969 Chevelle SS. Im also looking into getting a CB radio from that period. A modern radio doesn't look so good in that car.
