Hello all, I am not sure if I am in the right group here, but my question has to do with the TDOT help vehicles on the TACN system. Are they not in the clear? I have never heard any traffic on their talk groups. I have also spotted 700/800 antennas on TDOT trucks and would like to monitor them. Thanks for any help. I do lot of reading in forums but don't post much and haven't seen any information regarding either group.

TDOT help trucks are on TACN and in the clear with TDMA phase 2 voice traffic. Depending on where you are at in the state and what trucks are near the tower you are monitoring, that would determine what channels you may hear. The help trucks are always very active here in middle Tennessee and Nashville area. The trucks also pop up on THP dispatch every now and then and had Metro Nashville radio access as well when coordinating on incidents.

All TDOT Regions are in the clear not all TDOT trucks in the smaller counties are on the TACN System. Jackson and Memphis in the West ore on the TACN System

What part of the state are you located?
I am in Warren county. I can receive two sites from Short mountain the 700/800 channels and the vhf channels also, Hippytown farm, Winchester site.

I don' think you're going to hear any Help Truck traffic from Warren County. You will need to be able to monitor some of the sites around Nashville (TN Towers, Sullivan's Ridge, and Cane Ridge) to hear their traffic. Since we do not run simulcast sites on everything, you'll need to be monitoring a site that a TDOT radio is affiliated to. Most of the TDOT Help trucks stay around Nashville. It's rare that they would probably affiliate to Short Mtn.
ok thanks for the info. I thought that I might occasionally hear some traffic because I often hear THP units from the Nashville district when monitoring the Short mountain sites. Well I may hear some of their units when Bonnaroo comes to Manchester. Thanks again.

TDOT Help is definitely using TACN in Southeast TN. Just copied one at 182.4 mile marker on Westbound I-24, Chattanooga Simulcast site. Talk group 47151.
I’m currently providing the THP Region 3 Nashville feed on Broadcastify and have the scanner set to include HELP talkgroups too. It’s been a pretty good combination during this winter weather. You can always stream it if your tower site isn’t carrying them.
