When I read this, I thought to myself, how did this come to pass? Or, was it a combination of things. I don't know if this is related to net neutrality or something similar because, to me, it is a rather complex issue. I do know that the bandwidth is more valuable than gold in some case. Yeah, It's a real PITA. The FCC is sticking wireless mic users in to broadcast TV frequency ranges (and the guard bands) and it's up to the users to figure that out. I run sound for our local church and fought trouble for a few months until I took it upon myself to research all of the TV stations in the area and what frequencies they use. With one of the new mic receivers we purchased, I had about two or three usable channels. And, in an urban or suburban area, it probably isn't unrealistic to run across other, competing mic users as well. During one service, I kept seeing activity on one of our receivers. I could hear a band playing in a building down the street. It turns out they were using one of the channels we were. Fortunately, we weren't using that channel at the time. It's only going to get worse.

Our church is going through the same thing. As a member of the sound crew, I replaced a perfectly-good and relatively new 700MHz mic with a 600MHz mic the last time ... so now we get to replace the 600MHz mic. I'll have to check and see what bands the other mics are on.

This should be treated like 800MHz rebanding. The "winner" of the auction should be required to "reband" all the wireless mic users they are replacing.

But we all know the FCC has zero interest in supporting the public.
