Terminal Equipment Database

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what they are using for a database to manager terminal equipment assets? I am looking to track about 1,500 portables, mobile and desktops to include keeping maintenance records. I know Motorola makes an asset management application however we are not a Motorola customer.

I use MS Excell to track who, what, where all my equipment is assigned. I even assign a ID # to portable battiers and when I service them, I log what they info is and when I did them.

Been doing this for many years and works great.

Now this does not account for people changing equipment without letting you know.

Ditto Excel. We also record serial numbers (of course), firmware level, and flashcodes. Interestingly enough, Astro25 CPS allows us to "copy and paste" s/ns and flashcodes (no typos), but the APX CPS does not. Sometimes you have to wonder!

Double ditto on Excel. The basics are pretty easy to learn compared to setting up a real database in Access or similar. I find Excel is better for adding stuff every now and then. Got a new parameter you want to track? Insert a column, format it to your liking and keep on trucking. Acquire new gear? Insert rows and you're set. Need a special print-out? Hide the rows or columns that you don't need to see and print.

And, if you don't have MS Office and don't want to buy it, there are some fine freeware packages out there like OpenOffice that are just as powerful and easy to use.
