Wondering what Uniden is planning to do next.

I would love to see something like the BC396XT handheld but with HP-1 technology. And it could even have a built in GPS receiver! I do miss the close capture feature that the 996/396 have and the HP-1 does not.

But we could use an updated handheld. Any other dream radios out there?

A 386XT with dual receivers (Like the Icom R-20) and capable of scanning 1khz to 1.3Ghz (like the AOR 8200 mk III)...

I, for just one, agree with you on this. But, and it's a big but:wink:, is that unless the bean counters think that they will sell a c**p load of scanners, it just won't happen. Reason I bought a 396 is that it gives me more flexibility with my milcom monitoring. I may even buy a 15 for base use in the very near future. This is my first new Uniden since buying a 780 about ten years ago. Wish I had that radio back:) Was going to buy a comm receiver, about the same price, but it didn't have the specs for the range I needed:( As far as I'm concerned. Uniden will be my companion scanner for quite a while. UPman, keep them coming:D

I like the original suggestion, plus the addition of the remaining LTR modes (MultiNet & Passport) and MotoTRBO and MPT would be nice.

One thing Uniden scanners have lacked is a TUNE button for checking out a single frequency temporarily. The HP-1 has a similar function in the menu system, but it does not test for CTCSS/DCS/NAC.

They tried to go into the HF market with 2 receivers - the BR330T and the DX1000. Both were failures insofar as HF was concerned, and not widely embraced for their performance in that area (the 330 was fairly popular for other ranges it covered...).

Personally I don't think Uniden correctly understands that market - HF is a very different animal from scanning, and it takes a rather different mindset to make a radio that performs well there. That is something that Icom understands very well, having a rather large presence in the amateur radio world

best regards..Mike

Yea The 780's receiver ROCKED!! Heck I would be much happier if my 996 heard as well as my old 780.
in my area the 780 is very sensitive and does not suffer from intermod.

I would like to see a 396 sized unit with dual receivers.
GPS
Built in Bluetooth/network connectivity with iPhone/ Android remote control and programming.
How about building in an audio server??? wifi???
The 21st century has a lot going for it so lets hope uniden is up to the task.
The ability to remotely control and stream feeds would be great.
For example I could leave my scanner at work (where from the 10th floor it hears everything) wirelessly connected to the network. I would like to use the net and or my iphone/android to listen and control the thing.

GPS? Hell the gps chip is CHEAP!! i mean really cheap. their power consumption is LOW there really is NO reason to not build it in except to MILK end users of accessory dollars.

I am guessing that Uniden has sold a fraction of the number of HP's that they need to in order to continue R and D into new radios. Like it or not we will be stuck with it asnd small incremental updates to the 396/996 line of radios.
I don't get the feeling that Uniden is in no hurry to produce any more NEW radios. (no CES announcements??? We will wait at least another year.

Lots of great ideas here. I haven't seen a Homepatrol yet, but the sound quality on the 396 units is awful. FM broadcasts on my scanner should sound much better than my cell phone but the opposite is true. AM broadcast and shortwave reception would be cool too.

Micro USB ports for programming and charging. WiFi would be nice, able to program over wifi even better.

I like the suggestion for a built in web server/audio streaming capability.

I wish Uniden would change the way delays are handled. Per-channel instead of system-wide makes much more sense to me.
Also, an option for setting a 'group delay' on a group, which would function a little different than the regular delays.
Let's say you have a taxi system where the base transmits on frequency A and the mobiles on B. If you have a delay set on the current generation scanners, the scanner will sit on A for 2 seconds (or whatever delay is defined) after the transmission ends, and miss B completely. If you remove the delay, you might hear the response on B if they key their mic quickly enough, otherwise your scanner will then scan through all of the other enabled systems and you'll miss not only B's reply, but potentially A's next message, etc.
A 'group delay' would allow you to add A and B to the group, and after a transmission on either frequency it goes into a 'group hold' mode for 2 seconds (or whatever the user defines), so you can hear the response, and follow the back-and-forth communication on the two frequencies.

A different belt clip would be nice. That knob on the back of my 396XT got so annoying, I took it off. Also, more TGIDs per system would be helpful. The system I monitor (Texas Wide Area Radio Network) has over 1500 talkgroups, and Harris County alone has at least 1000 (I go there alot). Also, what I've found really annoying is that when you view the systems list, they aren't ordered by quick key, but rather by the sequence in which you programmed them in. On the 996T and XT, conventional VHF performance is extremely poor, and you can only receive frequencies in your immediate area. In fact, I lost all of my out-of-county VHF channels when I switched from my PSR600 to my 996XT (I didn't change my antenna setup at all when I switched them out).

I would also like to see a BNC antenna connector instead of the current one, which requires an adaptor to work with almost all other scanner antennas (I use an ICOM two-way radio antenna on mine). One other problem is the lack of a cover over the headphone jack. Anoth feature I would like to see is some sort of automatic quick-save mode. I hate hearing a new TGID and not being able to hit the E/YES key fast enough.

It would be nice to use a color touch screen similar to that on the HP-1. The scanner could look like an oversized touch-screen smart phone with a big antenna on top. It could feature a port for an SD card for expanded memory storage. Another nice touch would be the ability to monitor "dual-mode" conventional channels (P25 and analog) while still using the PL/DPL for the analog and NAC for the digital (like the Motorola XTS series radios).

A digital trunking scanner that will handle the multi-site trunking systems.

While I see some things people have posted here that I would definately like to have just remember more features more costs. Not saying I wouldn't pay more for more as I already paid 499.00 for my old BC396T which to this day I still kick myself in the backside for selling. But if I was paying %00 basically then why not pay 500-600 for a radio that is well put together and does what I want it to. Tht being said, I have read so many bad reports from people on the new home patrol, I have to say, I'm glad that I held off on this purchase. I'd be willing to wait for cost to come down before buying, but in the case of the HP1, not so sure. I'll wait to see what comes out next.

I think someone mentioned on-board recording... related to that, an "instant replay" button could be very useful, like the time shifting satellite radio receivers offer.
