Anyone know what freqs they frequent? Is it all Ham, cause as far as I've seen, no one gives a call sign. Tornadovideos.net looked like they had a GMRS with them possibly.

when tornadovideos.net was in my area they were on the ham freqs often used for storm spotting.

I'm curious about their radio set up. So far, the only mobile rig I've seen was a Kenwood in the Scout, and I'm not entirely convinced that 1) It works and 2) Either of those guys know how to use it.

Secondly, the tornadovideos.net guys didn't seem to have any radios until Sunday's episode where I finally caught a glimpse of the same type of Motorola (MCS Series?) radio on the dash, that everyone in the DOW group has. Am I correct to assume that these are probably provided by the Discovery crew to assist in logistics of the filming?

I'm surprised at the complete lack of digital scanners, that I've seen anyway. Kinda wish they would spend some time during an episode on what all equipment they use.

No, they don't do that. At some point you get into information overload, and it's not too often that cops get storm info before spotters do down that way.

When I got in on the Windsor, CO tornado last year, I had two P-25 radios with me and Rdale is right, I had to shut off one of them because it was just too much noise. My co-pilot was on the comp with GR3 and Streets and Trips, and we were still actively chasing a new rotational storm over Loveland, CO and trying to listen to the action in Windsor was just way too much. I've resorted to just listening to the Skywarn nets and using GRs warning window and Interwarn set to the counties I'm chasing in. (GR seems to update faster then Interwarn).

I looked up the names from the bio pages on QRZ, only a couple of the people on the show are hams. The main guy in the DOW is not. I don't remember who was.

I was wondering how many of them were hams too. Here are the ones I have found so far:

KE5HPC - Justin Walker
KC2LHD - Ronan P. Nagle

There are probably more since their team is very large.

Most of the radios they are using are Motorola CM300's. If you watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrM2uDPNYgE, they show a very good clip of it at about 0:23. The indicator lights are vertically aligned between the channel selector and the display, and there are 4 programmable buttons on the front.
