I was simply blown away!

About a foot long copper wire pulled from Cat 6 network cable was used to make this contraption. I simply wound a single cable 8 times around the pencil and left 1 inch on top and bottom. Inserted one end on the BNC female plug and bingo! I have also used a foot long wire as a tiger's tail. Never had such a drastic improvement in reception on the 452 MHz signal. Only bad part is this antenna performed sub-par for FM/AIR signals.

RTL-SDR is the best $20 I spent in a long time. BTW, I used the wooden thingie and few more length of a pair of the network cable to hold the USB female plug in place. Then the dongle just sits securely in a vertical position.

It might work a lot better if you made a 1/4 wave ground plane instead of a random piece of wire with a UHF RF choke in the middle.
