The time when a thread is started has always, to my knowledge, been misleading.
When I glance at a thread to see if it is recent I'm taken back by a time like 01:24PM.
That time is in the 24-hour format, yet the numbers are in the 12 hour format.
12-hour format for that time is 1:24PM (no zero).
24-hour format for that time is 13:24 (no PM)
I realize it is a minor point, but for me it's disconcerting. When I see a time beginning with zero, I automatically think it is an early morning time.

I'm sure it is in the basic program and no one at RR has any control over it.

I agree.

It's a vBulletin option that is easily changeable. AdminCP > Options > Date and Time Options > Format For Time

I believe the vB default is h:i A, which is 12hr time showing leading zeros for both AM and PM (as it currently is here)

If you change it to g:i A you get 1:24 AM or 1:24 PM without the leading zero.

If you change it to H:i you get 24 hour time 01:24 or 13:24 including the leading zero.

Thanks. I had no idea I could change it. I've used 24-hour time since 1951.

Oh, I didn't read your reply well because it seems only an Admin. can change it.
Do you plan to change it - or can you?

Oops sorry, yeah it's an option only the board admin can change, not per-user (unfortunately). I'm a database admin, not a admin for the site. Hopefully Wayne or Lindsay will look into changing it.

I've noticed it's also set for UTC time, not the local time. At least on my phone that's how it shows.

Well the site is on UTC (as is almost every site on the Internet), it is up to your device to convert to your local time. The UserCP has a field for the forums adjustment (on computer) to adjust since the forums ignore your computer's setting.

There is no native function in vBulletin to allow users to choose between 12hr or 24hr time. It would require a third-party plugin.

It would be a great idea to have local time that is determined by the user (saved in the user's account profile) and UTC time on the website and in 24 hour format.

I access the mobile site via my LG Octane 3G multimedia phone on Verizon's system, and I have no way of adjusting the time. I wasn't complaining, just making an observation.

I'm always confused by 12.34AM.

I have to have a think - but really shouldn't it be 00.43AM?

0043z solves all the problems and has been used for generations. Radio and teletype messages had a 'date-time' group which included the year (sometimes) and the month/date such as 1206221234 - 2012, June, 22nd, 1234z

I think you missed the point, Dick. When I see that someone has written 12.34AM I have to have a think about "is that in the middle of the night or the middle of the day?" - of course it soon comes to me that it must be the middle of the night, but in those circumstances shouldn't they write "00.34AM"?

Agreed that using a 24hour clock AND UTC removes all ambiguity.

AM and PM are not used with 24 hour time, that was Dick's point, and he was correct.

Maybe they do things a little differently down under, but around these parts it's either 00:34 or 12:34 AM. 00:34 AM is not a correct notation, as the "AM" would be redundant. 12:34 and 12:34 PM would refer to the same time, 34 minutes past noon.

Note that for "Military Time", the colon is omitted, so it would be 0034 and 1234.
