I have noticed a time signal station in the 500 to 600 kHz range in the wee hours of the morning here on the east coast. (Rhode Island, USA) An internet search came up with no info. Anyone know where this may be coming from? I thought maybe CHU, but there is no mention of a medium wave frequency on their website.

You might be referring to Radio Reloj (Radio Clock) on 570 kHz which is widely heard in North America at night. Radio Reloj also can be heard on other MW frequencies. These signals eminate from Cuba. The tone, in morse code, is RR (di-dah-dit di-dah-dit) and it is transmitted once a minute along with an ongoing newscast.

Yes, that must be it! I now recall hearing the RR in morse code. Thanks for the info, I knew this would be the place to get an answer. 73 de N3VOY

I can often hear this when driving to work at night when I get tired of XM or listening to the FM stations I like to switch over to AM and see just where I can pick up on my 40 min drive.

Oh boy! Seems kinda dangorus:lol: At least for me if im tired while driveing. I actully do find my self playing with the radio more often than I should be.

On topic I have heard the same time signal too, I actully think theres more than just one in 500-600khz range.

How do you figure its dangerous?

I'm not fooling with the radio while I'm driving. I have steering wheel controls, my hands never leave the wheel and I can tune around, adjust the volume, mute, change bands (AM/FM/XM) or switch through any of the programmed memories. Once again without ever taking my hands off the wheel or having to use anything more than my peripheral vision.

Believe me.... Me fooling with my radio tuning around seeing what DX I can pickup is a lot safer than 75% of the drivers on the road screwing around on the damn cell phone, or gasp sending text messages.

It could also be an intermod product from mixing. Depending upon the receiver (IF frequencies) and the fundamental frequency of the transmitter, you can mix down into the MW band.

I had a Sony clock radio in jr.high school that was terrible for picking up intermod. I could tune from one end of the AM band to the other and pick up WWV, lots of RTTY, SW broadcast and morse code. It was kinda cool with AM BCB stations and the quiet spaces in the middle filled with the musical jangling from the shortwave bands.

So much for 570 around here, that's WMCA in New York. Frankly "musical jangling" between stations would drive me nuts, that's where the DX is. European (ITU Region 1) channel spacing is every 9KHz 520-1602KHz as opposed to the 10KHz spacing 530-1700KHz in North America (ITU Region 2) so with a selective receiver and adjustable loop antenna you can pull them out.

Tuning, volume cntrols in the steering wheel.................
I like having a PTT button on my steering wheel. Just wish they'd make a bus steering wheel with the option to do just that.
