• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I wouldn't call one worse than the other. They are from two different eras, and have different capabilities. Deciding what you need should include looking at what the radios will do and comparing that to your needs.

The TK-x80 is plenty of radio if all you need is a basic analog radio. Plenty durable and lots of capacity.
The TK-x180 series are newer, have bigger displays, more capabilities (MDC1200) and will probably have more accessories easily available.

I've had TK-390's, and they are fine for what I needed. I've also got a TK-3180 and the additional capability and larger display (longer channel names) is really handy.

If you have the choice of both radios, got with the TK-3180.

A radio that old would be in need of an alignment.
Also, with any radio that age, the antenna should be replaced. Checking programming would be a wise choice, also.

Can I align it with my Kenwood software? Or does this need to be put on an Aeroflex

I would need to be connected to a service monitor, like an Aeroflex/Viavi, etc.
A radio shop can do it for you, but expect $100 or so, but the chance of a shop still having the programming software for these would be low.

Not a Kenwood guy myself but I know of many issues with failing LCD displays on the 280,380,480 series radios especially as they age. Somewhere in my radio collection I have a 380 and 480 and the displays on both radios are starting to have issues. Both are first Gen units.

the 380s were wheelchocks, and no matter how finely tuned they were on a service monitor - their conventional abilities sucked. Pretty not terrible on LTR/Passport, but on conv. they were good for taping messages to them and then throwing them at the recipient.

Got tired of the constant tuning, and went to the x180s and never looked back.

Yep, 280/380s are oldy moldy. 1998 called and wants their CD singles, Backstreet Boys cassettes, and 80 series portables with it.

The 2180/3180 while now 19 years old (released in 2nd Q 2004), are miles above the 80 series. KPG-89D is s breeze, F/W 1.22 supports MDC1200 encode/decode for the "cop sounds" everyone loves. Good radios with easy to find accessories, and pretty damn good perfomance too.
