I have some questions I am hoping anyone on here can answer for me

I will be going to Toronto in July for a few days and I will be bringing my BC796D and PRO 96 with me. When I go I will be taking Hwy 69 from Sudbury then onto the 400 later on from there going through Parry Sound and Barrie and then into Toronto from there. I haven't been down that way and especially to Toronto for a long time. The last time I was there was when the OPP was still on the NOR System. So this will be my first time down there since they have switched over to Fleetnet.

1st: So I am just wondering what Fleetnet Sites would I put into my scanner(s) while I am on my way to Toronto using the 2 highways posted above.

2nd: What Zones would I be looking at using on those 2 highways mentioned above and also while I am in Toronto, so I can print off the Zone 1 or 2 Talkgroups page, so I will know what I am hearing. Let me know.

3rd: What other interesting stuff would there be to listen to as well while I am on those 2 highways before I get into Toronto like: Fire, Trains, etc. Also if you can tell me the freq's for these things as well, I would appreciate it. So it will help me out so I will just have to punch them in and have them all ready to go.

4th: What are some other good things to listen to in Toronto other than the Aircrafts and Trains. Like the NEWS Planes that fly around and give traffic reports, Fire (What Freq's the Fire uses), News People Ex: City TV, etc. And anything else that would be good to listen to. I am looking for anything at all. Let me know.

5th: What Fleetnet Site(s) would I use in Toronto. Let me know.

6th: Also what MNR Freq's for Ex: 46.580, etc are used along those 2 highways that I posted above and in Toronto now during the Forest Fire Season. Let me know.

That is all the questions I have for now. So I will be waiting for any replies to ALL the QUESTIONS I just asked in this post. Thanks.

Toronto area Fleetnet

Mowat #40 covers the GTA Highways from as far east as Durham to as far west as Cambridge.
Lots of patient transfers to T.O. hospitals on 36176, Paddy wagons on 8896.

Mississaugas tower in the west end is strong. On that tower all MOH action for the Mississaugas CACC (EMS dispatch area) & The OPP for Burlington/Niagara talkgroup can be heard here.
To the north punch in King City.

If you have a really good antenna try Hamiltons tower. Ballinafad is strong to the north & west of Toronto. Fonthill provides a strong signal for Niagara Region action.

Most OPP talkgroups are multi-selected 2gether I.E. Toronto 5F & Whitby 5K are pat ched on either 8720 & 8768.
Make sure you enter in all OPP Disptach talkgroups for your area.

Very little MNR activity in the GTA. They are usually patched in with a MTO or Caledon 1 Sierra talkgroup. I occasionally hear them checking in with their dispatcher for calls normally around Barrie.

Should you choose to monitor the Municipal system you will need some room IMO for banks dedicated to EMS, FIRE & PD separetly.

for zone 2

MoonRiver; Bracebridge; Parrysound; Britt - unsure of further north than parrysound as I haven't been that far since zone 2 went live.

OPP Combined talk groups with 1C and 4J

Zone 1

Penetang; Edgar; Kingcity; Toronto; Mississauga and Whitby if heading east of the DVP

401 from the 427 east to Newtonville is on 5F or 5K, west of the 427 is on 5I (portcredit) or the Cambridge 5 talkgroup.

Hope that helps, its just off the top of my head...

Ok I will try those towers out when I go and I will see what I get.

So I guess there is not that much activity on any of the MNR FIRE Freq's like for Example:46.580, etc now during this Forest Fire Season. If there is could you tell me what freq's are used along those 2 highways that I posted in my last post and also if they use any in Toronto to. So let me know. So I can listen to see what kind of activity if any I will hear on them.

Also what are the freq's for the NEWS PLANES that fly around and give traffic reports. I know there were two Freq's for 2 different News Planes. I just can't remember them. So if anyone can remind me I would appreciate it.

Also would you be able to hear any freq's from any of the news places like for Example: City TV, CBC, etc. If you can, can you let me know the freq's.

What kind of Freq's would I listen to for the Fire Dept's along those 2 highways mentioned in my previous post and in Toronto. Let me know.

Also what Zone(s) for all the Talkgroups do I have to worry about while I am on my way to Toronto and when I am in Toronto. Do I need just Zone 1 or 2 or would I need to look at both Zones for all the Talkgroups I will be hearing. Let me know.

And finally what other kind of interesting stuff is there to listen to in Toronto while I am there other than the Aircrafts and Trains. I am looking for anything at all. So let me know.

I will be waiting for any replies to ALL the QUESTIONS I just asked in this post. Thanks.

in my opinion Toronto Police is the most interesting to listen to in Toronto.

Peel is pretty good too.. but Hamilton beats them both! I once heard a call for a guy who robbed a tim hortons with a hacksaw.. for nothing more than donuts and coffee.. Generally you an pick up Hamilton from West Mississauga-Oakville-Burlington.. i have even picked it up from the 400 around Radio World..with a magmount..

Hamilton uses a lot of codes in their transmissions.
You will have to print out a list of 10 codes.
Toronto generally doesnt other than VSA, CNI, 10/27. 10/29, etc.

None of this matters as Coolguy I doubt is gonna monitor Hamilton.

As for the rest of your question coolguy.
Map out exactly where you are driving in from and punch in fire frequencies for the counties/regions/cities, etc you are passing thru.

There are others from north of the GTA who if they choose to can help out and senf you files or point you in the right direction.

My knowledge of scanning is generally concentrated in the core of the GTA and Halton.

Ok. I got all that. I will listen to all that stuff when I get there.

Also I totally forgot about the Toronto Police and Peel.

1: What type of system do they use and what Freq's do they use also.

2: Do they use UHF Freq's or whatever like that for their portables, just like the OPP, EMS, etc. Or no. But if they do, would anyone be able to let me know what the freq's are for there portables, so I can punch them in.

If I remember correctly the Toronto Police and Peel and all of them use or are on the same system.

Nope I am probably not going to monitor Hamilton, because I will be right in Toronto somewhere in a hotel, where I dunno yet. So I will probably just be able to monitor what I can pick up from what ever hotel I am going to be at in Toronto.

3: Also about the Fire Dept's. I guess if I try to monitor them along those 2 highways that I mentioned in my FIRST POST. I would just do a search between 153.000 MHz - 155.000 MHz.

4: Then when I get into Toronto what system and or freq's do they use there. Let me know.

I will be waiting for any replies to all the questions I just asked in this post. Thanks again everyone for your help.

Toronto uses a simple motorola system with 4 towers. The cities EMS, FDP & PD are on here.
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=738

The south tower pretty much broadcasts everything.
The north tower seems to focus on transmissions focusing on the more northern parts of the city (32/33 Divisions, Fire calls with units being with 1, NE & NW towers.
The west tower has a lot of 1 zone PD and FDP units beginning 4.

If you are smart you will devote entire banks for the EMS, PD & PD. Toronto is a huge citiy and action is non-stop.

I couldnt tell you about Peel, I dont monitor it. A guy like Chrome69 probably does.

For your fire department questions.
Take a look at a map, see which counties you will drive thru and utilize this database.
It wont take 30 min to make a bank for all FDP's for your trip.
All I know are that Peel, Halton, Hamilton, T.O. & York are on trunked systems.

There are files galore on the Yahoo group.
I am sure you can build good files from those.

Tutorial and DB?

Hey folks, I have my 1st scanner (a bcd396t).

Was wondering if I could convince someone for a tutorial and config assistance in exchange for coffee and a snack?

I'm in downtown Toronto. I'm trying to setup tps, ems and fire, but not having a lot of luck.

I'm sure I'm just missing something stupid, but frustration is climbing :(

Anyone have uniden director database files I could poach?

Ok thanks for that info on the PD, FD & EMS there EJB.
When you say if I am smart I would devote entire banks for all of them. I am just wondering would I be able to enter a few sites in the same bank instead of doing what you said, so it will save me some space in my BC796D and PRO 96. Because for my BC796D since I don't have any software to use with it, like for my PRO 96 I have WIN 96 to use to make changes and save them and to do it that way. So since I don't have that, I have to do everything by hand with that scanner like punch everything in manually (Freq's and Names for each channel and freq). This way would be easier.

But maybe would anyone happen to know if there is still anything out there for the BC796D that I can download and use or if anyone has a file they can send me to download. Just like WIN 96 for the PRO 96. If there is, could anyone on here let me know. So I can download it and start using it, so then I can get it set up to use ENTIRE BANKS for the Toronto System and also so I can save what I have on it now, so I won't have to write everything down and re-enter everything back in manually everytime I enter new stuff on it or whate ever. Let me know.

Also my last question for now. I can't remember on the top of my head right now. Would anyone happen to know what NEWS PLANES fly the sky and give traffic reports and what freq's they use. I remember seeing them on here before, but I can't seem to find it. I think the freq's where in the 150.000 MHz range. Let me know.

I will be waiting for any replies to these last 2 Questions for now that I just asked in this post. Thanks again for all your help. Sorry for so many questions.

If you are using a scanner that has some limitations as to how many systems you put in I underststand but do understand it is pretty hard to follow the entire city at once.
You may wanna build banks for your area or a specific area of interest.

Again, there have gotta be compatible files in the yahoo group.
As for your last question I dont really folow traffic planes; conventional radio stations such as 680, 1010 and many others in the GTA have 'traffic all day, every second of the day.'

(freq's for) the NEWS Planes that fly around and give traffic reports

Just listening now to a beautiful signal from the AM 640/Q 107 traffic helicopter with Jodi Gasco reporting. This is on 450.4000 MHz.
I see on our Toronto page in the DB that it is listed as 455.4125

Anybody who can listen to rush hour right now should , and you'll see what I mean.

Another thing I found out if anyone can give me an answer to this question.

I will be staying at a hotel in Toronto on York Mills Road. So since I will be way down there, will I still listen to the same Fleetnet Sites that everyone has mentioned. Or will there be maybe other ones I should put in my scanner to. And will the same thing go for the Toronto System (Police, EMS, FIRE). Will I have to enter in all 4 towers or still just the South Tower for everything and then the North & West Tower for the other stuff.
What about the EAST TOWER. Will I be able to listen to that from where I am staying to. If so, what kind of stuff is on this EAST TOWER to listen to. Let me know.

Also for the OPP do they use there other VR there in Toronto like: VR02 & VR03.
And what about any of these Freq's also. Let me Know, so if they use any of these or SIM Channels that I also listed below. I can enter them into scanner.

And is the Air Ambulance - Medcom Dispatch Freq of:
413.68750 418.68750 R Air Ambulance - Medcom Dispatch FM
Is this one used in and around Toronto to. Let me know.

That should be all the questions I have for now, unless I happen to think of anything else in the mean time.

So I will be waiting for any replies to ALL the QUESTIONS I just asked in this post. Thanks again everyone for your help. I appreciate it.

Now I was just thinking about these Fleetnet Sites.

For all these Fleetnet Sites I will be listening to in Toronto while I am at a hotel on York Mills Road.

I am just wondering will I have to put every Fleetnet Site into a different bank in my PRO 96 and BC796D, or will I get away by putting some into the same bank in both scanners. Like will all the towers that I will be trying to listen to be strong in signal strength or will some be stronger in signal strength than others. Say if I am only using a flexable antenna on it (on my PRO 96) or using a MAG MOUNT Antenna (just sitting inside the hotel room on a table by the window of course) or the telescopic antennae that came with my scanner (for the BC796D). I am just wondering this, so I will have an idea as to how many banks I will need to set up for Fleetnet on both of my scanners and then how many banks I will need to set up for the Toronto 800 MHz System and for everything else I am going to try to listen to. Like do it all here at home on the computer, then just upload it to both of my scanners when the time comes for my trip to Toronto. So let me know.

I will be waiting for any replies to the ONE QUESTION I just asked in this post. So thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

You can put multiple Fleetnet sites into 1 bank on the Pro-96 no problem. Chances are once you are situated in your hotel room you will find that you only need to monitor one site and can lock out the others. Or just let it scan and jump from tower to tower (assuming you are receiving multiple sites at once).

I have a V-Scanner folder setup for Toronto in my Pro-96. The first few banks are for Fleetnet and OPP/EMS conventional frequencies. The remainder of the banks are setup for York, Peel and Toronto PD/FD/EMS. I'll send you a copy of my .96 file if you like... it may be a little out of date but should give you something to work from.

For anyone with a new 396t, two free programs, with a subscription to RR either one makes things much easier for the newbie. (Don't bother with Uniden's booklet, it's like trying to learn Chinese.)
bctool and freescan.
Here are the links to both programs.
