I think RR set a new overall listener record tonight. Saw about 22,000 or maybe 23,000 listeners overall at one point. Right now at 3:55am eastern, still 21,500 listeners on. Normal average i've seen is around 8-11,000 most nights. Talk about a shock to the system LOL.

That does indeed sound like it would be a "shock to the system." Regardless of how much of a shock it may have been, isn't it great that the Live Audio platform is now so robust that there was no noticeable problems in maintaining audio streams or connections to players during that time?

Lindsay, Gordon & Co have done an amazing job on the Live Audio platform. It's definitely been proven to be ready for prime time!

22000 listeners * 8 kbit/sec = 180 mbit of traffic
22000 listeners * 16 kbit/sec = 360 mbit of traffic

I'm betting that the usage during that time was somewhere between the above two figures. That's pretty astonishing :)

Almost all mono feeds run at 16 kbit/s, with stereo feeds running at 32 kbit/s, so you're probably looking at upwards of half a GB per second of bandwidth, or about 30 GB per minute or almost 1.8 TB per hour. Not too shabby.

Monitoring from work last night I thought I saw the current listeners count at about 25,000 and the bottom feed on the top 50 list had over 75 listeners, somewhere around about midnight or shortly after. These are some really amazing numbers!

Yeah, I know better. My own feeds are 16 kbit/mono. Just wasn't thinking straight. BTW, Gb and Tb :)

It seems we have gained some new listeners this New Year. Feed count is at 14,400 at 02:20am. The last few months on a Saturday night, it was only around 10-12,000 at this time.

I can't remember exactly when Lindsay created the live feed section but I remember him saying that he wanted the infrastructure to be able to handle 25,000 listeners within I think a year. Looks like it handled close to that.

I'm glad to see these types of numbers out there with scanner streams.

I remember sitting here about 10 years ago, just simply wanting to listen to some scanners online, did a few searches, came up with a few, decided to create a (now diminishing) yahoogroup for people that were interested in sharing a hobby of mine of scanners.

Very happy to see the direction of the hobby changing to this type of format. A little known hobby is still widely out there especially with the ever evolving internet.
