I just received a new Tram 1470 kit. The ground plane radials it came with are very thin as compared to my custom cut radials I am using on another set which are cut to 700/800 Mhz. Does it matter on the thickness of the ground radials for these antennas or wound the thicker ones work better. I can either cut the new radials to length (4") or try and drill out (if possible) the 4 holes on the mount to fit my current radials?

I can't imagine that increasing the radial diameter a bit (ex: 1/16" to 1/8") would have a noticeable impact on the performance of the radial kit. You should be fine with what it comes with.

Are Ground Plane radials beneficial to reception on 700/800. I see some base antennas with them and some without. As noted I purchased the TRAM 1470 and will be trying it out soon, however I noticed another one similar from Laird. Its the MBC800. Anyone tried it as compared to the TRAM 1470.
