Hi, I'm new to radio in general and I want to get a scanner to hear what's going on in the Travis County/Austin area. I've only used a scanner a few times (in WA state, about 10 years ago) so I don't know much. My questions are:

Would a Pro-197 be an OK starter scanner for this area? I know that I'll need to understand P25, is that going to be WAY over a beginner's head? I'm more than willing to read the instruction manual front-to-back, internet sources, etc.

Is there a different radio that someone would reccomend?

Thanks a lot.

Actually, the 197 is an ideal receiver for Travis County. Austin and Travis Cty use such a large trunking system, that most lesser scanners don't have the memory space for all the talkgroups, whereas the 197 can handle it just fine. Continue reading (and searching) the Texas forum for answers to your questions, and don't forget to use the RR wiki in blue above. When I get in front of a computer for long enough, I'll start posting some relevant reading material.
