• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Trbo CPS 2.0 is a super fail for me, what about the rest of you?

Well, I just tried to actually edit a codeplug and shoot a radio---what an experience. SLOW, really really SLOW. Reads slow, writes SLOW, loads SLOW, edited fields react SLOW. To actually build a code plug would be excruciating. I cannot sort zones. The radio will display zones alphabetically (numbers 1st, then letters) and it is nice to be able to display them the same way in CPS, but no you can't. You click on a channel in a list and after awhile it will open the single channel view for editing. When you make a change the software takes forever to react and display results. Then when you wish to go back list, you have to click on zone again in the tree and after you have gone to make coffee it finally shows up. All in all I find the software unusable. I have Kenwood FPU which loads extremely slowly but once loaded the field react in reasonable time and radio reads and writes are reasonably fast. I have only 1 updated radio fortunately so remainder units are on CPS 16. I have only loaded the CPS on 1 laptop and not shop desktops so maybe this problem is peculiar to my laptop, and if so I apologise for the rant. Any one else have a different experience?

It’s not you, CPS2.0 is horrible. Slow on a fast computer doing everything - reading, writing, creating codeplug, editing codeplug. It’s a (insert your favorite curse word) nightmare! Even worse is there is no migration tool to convert a CPS 16.5 build 828 codeplug to a CPS 2.0 codeplug. No stage and drop between softwares.

Motorola has a migration software tool, but dealers don’t have access to it! Sent a XPR3500e with 2.08 firmware to the depot and it came back with 2.10 firmware and was programmed exactly like it was before sending to the depot. The codeplug as very complex Cap+ with 30+ talkgroups.

Have to program 600 new XPR3500’s in the next few weeks. Can’t use the older codeplug, so will have to create 3 new Cap+ codeplug.... Not looking forward to this.

So, what even “theoretical” improvement can be found? Why would anyone release new software with no added benefit? The fact that it is demonstratively worse is unfathomable!

I wi say it again. If you are using the CPR series personally and don’t need any support, DONOT to the latest.

Really no excuse with the price they get for their software and products.
For the most part, you get what you pay for with Motorola. Their radios are superior to other brands currently being sold. Their phone tech support is excellent (at least for dealers).

As for their CPS, it appears that every radio line has a different group of coders writing it. Some CPS is fast, smooth and works great. On the other hand, certain CPS is just horrible at best.

Individuals have to pay for CPS, but dealers that sell over a certain amount $$ of radios get ALL software for free. When I log onto my work MOL account, there is CPS that dates back to the 90’s!

I downloaded it. The day 2.0 hit was my last day working for a large Motorola dealer and my ex-emoployer MOL account is still active (three months later). I haven't upgraded anything personal to 2.0 (I don't see a need to).

I feel bad for some of my former co-workers reading these threads though...

Let me fix your word salad first, then retort:

“I will say it again. If you are using the XPR series personally and don’t need any support, DO NOT upgrade to the latest.”

First, you still have support for the older versions of CPS and firmware via a phone call to Motorola. Motorola added a new prompt to their phone support;
Press 2 for radios with firmware 2.09 and under.
Press 3 for radios with firmware 2.10

Second, there are 10’s of thousands of XPR radios with 2.09 or lower in the field or customers hands, and still under warranty, and Motorola realizes, many if not most, will never be upgraded. So they still support and warranty them.

Third, when a XPR radio is sold by a official Motorola dealer, the serial number is scanned and uploaded to Motorola. This is done for warranty purposes. A dealer may have a new XPR that’s been sitting in the stock room for a year or more. That’s why dealers scan and upload the serial number to Motorola, so the warranty period will start when the radio was sold, not manufactured. If the XPR radio’s serial number was NOT sent to Motorola when the radio was sold, then Motorola goes by the serial number for warranty purposes. For this reason, the first question anyone should ask when buying a new Motorola radio on eBay, “has this radios serial been recorded and uploaded to Motorola?” This could be the difference of getting a broken XPR3500e repaired for free or having to pay their flat rate of $337.00.

Your ex-employer just forgot to disable your MOL account. If your ex-employer, who is responsible for keeping track of their MOL accounts is a fluff brain, you’ll have access to it for years.

Upgrading to F/W 2.10 - CPS 2.0 should be based on your clients needs. 2.10 does introduce new features to some TRBO radios, but you have to pay for the EID for these new features. The CP200d with 2.10 adds 2 new EID’s not available with 2.09 firmware.

It all boils down to your client/customers needs whether they should upgrade to 2.10 OR buy a new XPR from Motorola with 2.10 already installed Moto.

Now this is interesting... 2 days last week, we ordered 6 XPR3500e’s, then the next day we ordered 4 XPR3500e’s. Both orders were the exact same model number, same accessory package, but the price was higher on the 6 radios vs. the 4 radios. This made no sense until a call to Motorola. The 6 radios had 2.10 F/W and contained more “free” EID’s, while the 4 radios had 2.09 F/W and didn’t contain certain EID’s. I use the word “free” very loosely because it’s not “free”. The customer is paying a higher price for “free”.

Sounds like the difference between Capable and Enabled packaging.. Since I am not a dealer I am not sure how you differentiate in the order entry tool, but based on the new subscribers I have worked with there is a significant difference in the packaging of Entitlements between the two. Surprised to hear the 2.9 F/W is still coming out of the warehouse.

Maybe this blog post can help --

I installed CPS 2.0 just before my TRBO subscription expired (I don't need to renew, on 1st gen fleet that stoped updating f/w years ago), and opened it to test it out. I am able to open the old codeplugs from CPS on CPS 2.0 with no issues. I still have CPS 16.0 (828) on the PC's. I also tried opening my 7350 CPS 16 codeplug in 2.0. I am able to move zones around and the codeplug itself opened without issue. Everytime I click something, there is a 10 second delay with (not responding) and a spinning circle on Windwos 10 though. :-\

The CPS is a lot happier in win7 32 bit. I personally recommend that unless forced to stay at v16.0.

Again. The newest software offers zero new capability to a ham user. Seriously dude. It doesn’t. I have an XPR-7550 that will MEVER be upgraded to use this abomination of firmware or software.

More so, Motorola’s implementation of DMR is not even compliant with the standard.

As time goes on and Capacity Plus and Connect are EOL, Hytera and Kenwood will continue to take market share away from Motorola. This latest software revision only ensures this to happen.
