New to the forum here! I use a Pro-96 and am having trouble scanning State Police Troop E. I can sometimes here Troop E dispatch on digital but other times I just hear random bursts of static that occur every few seconds. I have since locked this channel out because it has become an annoyance. Does anyone have a similar problem or suggestions?

There's a thread on just that subject in this forum titled "Static on NHSP frequency." Bottom line is you're probably hearing data being transmitted to the mobile computers on the same frequency.

KZAV is correct. Troop E along with Troop A have a number of mobiles that have the CAR-54 technology installed that allows their laptops to communicate over the air using the same repeater voice channel as the Troop Stations. When the scanner you are using intercepts data it gets confused and decodes the data bursts as noise. If you are using a Pro-96 or Pro-2096 it will also falsely cause the ENC to display.

No current scanner manufacturer currently has available a scanner that can differentiate between data and actual voice, making listening to several NH Troop stations extremely annoying.

Interestingly enough, ICOM is now offering both portable and mobile P25 radios in the 8 to 900 dollar range. These radios can not only differentiate between voice & data, but also allow you to program in the actual P25 network IDs (somewhat akin to PL or DCS).

Needless to say I no longer monitor those two troops on either my Pro-2096 or my BC-796 but revert to my XTL-5000 or XTS-2500....otherwise I would loose my mind!

Sorry, no easy answer for you there!

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that Troop E had their CAR-54 terminals actually sending information. I work for a local department and our CAR-54 terminals are nothing more than glorified emergency light switches.

Hopefully the next generation of scanners will correct this annoying problem.

I'd like to be able to see radio ID's on my scanner much like my department portable.

Thanks.

One other question Plxnbury. If you don't mind me asking; where did you buy your XTL-5000 and did you have any issues getting it programed? I was thinking about putting one (or something similar) in my personal vehicle.
