We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. UPDATED STORY (10:50pm): A Michigan State Police trooper is in critical condition after an accident alongside I-96.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night near mile marker 122 - between the Webberville and Fowlerville exits. It forced police to shut down the highway in both directions.

State police say the trooper had pulled one vehicle over when he was hit by another second one traveling down the highway.

The officer was taken by helicopter to a University of Michigan hospital where he's listed in critical condition.

The driver who police say hit the trooper - a 49-year-old man - was also injured and taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control of th car and hit the trooper.

The accident forced police to close the highway in both directions. The west-bound lanes opened a little more than an hour after the accident. The east-bound lanes opened almost three hours later.

UPDATE (8:55am): Drew Spencer, the 27-year-old Michigan State Police trooper injured in the accident, has been upgraded from "critical" to "serious."

UPDATE (10:51am) - The University of Michigan hospital incorrectly reported that Trooper Spencer's status had been upgraded. They called to correct themselves. He remains in critical condition.
