Whistler 1040 - what are those FTDI drivers named? I don't think I'm loading them. Pictures below.
<<<If you haven't resolved this, try downloading and installing these drivers from FTDI:
<<<Make sure the cable is not plugged into your computer during the install.
<<<After the installation is complete you should be able to access the cable.

o_O A few Q's? What is your OS? Are you just installing EZscan? Was it working before and it stopped? Depending on the situation a solution may be different. o_O

That's not a FTDI chip. That's a Cypress chip and doesn't use the FTDI drivers. If you're using WIN500 you'll need to use the WIN500 COM version (I think that's what it's called) and select the COM port to be used.

The newer Whistler cables no longer use FTDI chips.

It's not a chip. It's a different version of WIN500 that supports the use of COM ports as opposed to using the direct access mode of the FTDI chipsets. If you have WIN500 on your computer, it may already be installed on the machine.

Ok... think I got FTDI drivers in USB Serial Converter.
I switched to ARC500 for Whistler 1040 but still doesn't work.

What do the Properties show for the USB Serial Port (Com4) under the Ports (COM & LPT) section show? Include the Driver properties in your screenshot also for this one.

There should be a large yellow insert instructing you how to change the program's configuration. I noticed this insert helping a friend program their 1040.

This should be normal. These models do not create a drive letter.

What does the scanner display show when you do an upload?

It should say "PC/IF -> FileSys" on the top line and a ways down, it should show a percentage indication that starts at 0% and goes to 100% as the file uploads. When that is done, the scanner should restart.

If the above is what you see in the scanner display, you either have a physical issue with the scanner or a bad file or frequencies in the file that are not within your range as a few examples.

You could also upload the .p500 file you are uploading to the radio here. Someone can look at that and see if anything stands out.
.p500 is a Win500 file. Upload the file you are sending to the radio from ARC500 but I don't recall what extension ARC500 uses.

edit: I think ARC500 uses files with a .gr5 extension.

Thanks kruser... I get that when upload to scanner. Don't know what's wrong. It's got to be a driver problem.
Someone said...
Device manager... Com+LPT... expand to USB Serial Device (ComX)... right click... Update...
select Browse My Computer for driver software... Select let me pick from a list pf device drivers on my computer...
THEN... highlight Whistler WS-500 or WS-1095 Serial Device as applicate... click next... Pop-up... Windows cannot verify publisher of this driver software.
<<<<< I don't have ... highlight Whistler etc etc >>>>>
Here's what is uploaded to scanner with ARC500. It's a .gr5... I changed it to .txt. Looks ok!
SmileyInCharlotte (ain't smiling too much)
BTW... light on scanner cable blinks during upload to scanner.

Something else caught my eye... When ready to upload to scanner... Win500 ask me to select...
USB/Com4 (ok) Check Cable type 2 (ok) and I get the download to scanner with PC/IF -> FileSys .
CHECKING... Win500 config is odd... "COMPort=8" PICTURE
Maybe that'll help!

Using ARC500 and Radio Shack USB cable, both ARC500 and the LED's on the cable show data is being transferred even without a scanner connected. The screen on your scanner should display the percentage transferred while the scanner is uploading. If you don't see that, data is not being transferred. Make sure that you are plugged into the PC/IF jack and not the headphone jack.
