Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Pardon me but I am angry. I have a friend who is a Motorola expert who is stubborn and not answering calls, so here I am. I am technical but I have little Motorola or Digital Radio experience. I have ordered some software of Ebay for programming the 6550, which is flashing a red (or orange LED) at me.

Please tell me the 6550 is not failing. Actually I'm tempted to go Kenwood because I'm tired of asking questions and not having the answered.

I have requested to change calls. My original call is KC3NG and I've applied for it as a vanity call.

Googling XPR6550 user guide will give you a link to the user guide from Motorola. The answer to your question and more are within that manual.

I'm everywhere Focker!
Blinking red – Radio is transmitting at low battery condition,
receiving an emergency transmission or has failed the self-test
upon powering up.
Solid yellow – Radio is monitoring a channel.
Blinking yellow – Radio is scanning for activity or receiving a
Call Alert.
Double blinking yellow – Radio is no longer connected to the
repeater while in Capacity Plus or all Capacity Plus channels
are currently busy.
Rapidly blinking yellow – Radio is actively searching for a new
site.

Actually the blinking has stopped on a fully charged battery after some messing with it. Ir seems to be ok now. It's been programmed for just Trbo channels. I wish some non-digital local channels had been put it in. I bought a programming disk and cable on a vendor board but I read that the disk is likey to be bootleg?

Ok the light is out but when I hit the ptt switch,.the HT emits a tone as long as I have the ptt pushed. What does that mean? It's on a turbo channel.

Get a little closer

If you have it programmed correctly, you are not close enough to get into a repeater. There's a little handshaking going on between your radio and the repeater before you can bring up the machine. If that don't happen, you get the bonk.

PS: I'm so glad you didn't get flamed for something you said in your original post. That's a good thing.

I think I see it and I apologize. I think it is programed correctly thank you for saying what my problem was.

I'll be curious to determine if the software will work.

I think, but I'm not sure that I am fatiguing with mototrbo solutions and that I am going to turn to ham vendors for a solution. There is something VERY fatiguing about what feels like control.

Just a thought but have you reached out to your local ham community for assistance? You probably need a valid radio ID to access their systems. Local admins or users can help you get online. You can see a listing of repeaters and contacts via this website:

Hi Randy,
I received a valid ID from them last night. Currently what is installed is "made-up". Do you think it would make a different in systemic performance?

I do not currently have a programming cord but I have one on order from China. One major problem is that only trbo repeaters are programmed into my TRBO. I dont hear anyone. I wish a few traditional repeaters were programmed in order to have a basis of comparison. ALSO last night during the programming the friend did show a page on the internet that on could look and see their kerchunks. Do you happen to know where that is?

Possibly. The next question would be if you all the necessary talk groups, time slots, etc currently programmed into the radio for what your local DMR repeater has available. You don't need to answer that but if you are not familiar with DMR, there is much more info that needs to be programmed beyond just the frequency and User ID. You probably know that but just mentioning it in case.

Per the link that I sent you, zero down to the specific repeater that you are trying to access. Click on it and view the contact info for the admin. They can help you further and probably put you in touch with a local person that can help program your portable right away. Therefore you won't have to wait for your programming cable to show up.

Happy comms to you!

The thing I am curious about was there was a place on the internet where we could watch all digital activity in turns of transmitters. Do you know anything about that. I could tell much about my own TRBOs if I had that address.

Most of the networks have what's called netwatch. Just google for the DMR repeaters in your area and you will find it. And yes your CPS is probably bootleg if you didn't purchase it from Motorola solutions directly. But they don't seem to care anymore as the latest Trbo CPS can be found and downloaded for free within minutes using google. Also many American vendors selling programming cables for the 6550 both aftermarket and OEM. No need to wait for something from China.

XPR 6550 Newbie Questions

What does it mean when my 6550 has a flashing RED LED that turns to either no LED or sometimes a flashing green LED when I press the ptt. The mode is digital and I am on a frequency called TAC 310 in Silver Spring, Md. The data for the ht was made up although now I have the data from Marc-DMR.

I saw the flashing red light question answered elsewhere.

The double green flash means you're transmitting. There is a brief handshake with the repeater and the radio needs to transmit two quick bursts when you first key it.

TAC 310 is a general talk group. (Group 310). It's often used for pre-arranged chats. See --> DCI- c-Bridge - TAC - a TalkGroup Project and Proposal

In most cases, you need to key the radio for a couple of seconds to bring up the internet link that connects the TRBO systems together.

Since I don't know where you live, it's difficult to provide any specific help. I currently have one portable and two mobile DMR radios, and am currently waiting for my local postal worker to bring the XPR7550 I ordered. It's been riding around in her vehicle for two days now!
