I am trying to get setup for FT8 on VHF. I have the WSJT-X software loaded and I need to know what I need to be able to get going with my radio. Do I need something other than the SCU-20 cable? I have the HRI-200 kit but I am not sure if I need it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FT8 uses sideband (SSB) not FM. The FTM-400 is an FM transceiver, with AM receive for airband. It is never going to work for FT8.

You can do FM packet with the FTM-400, like winlink and BBS.

okay. I understand that but it shows that you use 144.174 on 2 meter. So is what I read wrong? Thanks for your help.

Have it figured out now. Just need a new radio that does HF/VHF/UHF all in one.
Thanks again everyone.

There are many current production radios that are able to do this, and yes, some of them are HF/VHF/UHF in one box. A short list of current production radios that can do SSB on VHF(not complete):
Icom IC-9700
Icom IC-7100
Icom IC-705
Yaesu FT-818
Yaesu FT-991A

There are also many older/used radios that are also able to get you there.

To directly answer your question, you need a radio that can transmit using SSB modulation. Most of these sound card digital modes, including FT8, require an SSB radio, no matter what frequency band you are using.

The Icom IC-7100 was mentioned above. I am not going to say that it's discontinued, but it is in very short supply. Among the usual online retailers, MTC Radio is the only one that has them in stock, though their price is inflated a bit. Some folks write off the IC-7100 because of the goofy control head ergonomics. On the plus side, you can put the RF box out of the way and place just the control head at your operating position.
