Hello, I am new to the sdr world and downloaded sdrsharp, hdsd, and the winusb driver for the rtl-sdr to get started. Now, I want to use salamandra, the microphone "bug" finding tool, and have followed the quick setup guide and can not figure out how to get the rtl_test command to run using Windows 10? I read that in order to make salamandra run it uses rtl_power to get the program going and also read that rtl_power is in librtlsdr. I downloaded librtlsdr just in case and I am not sure how to check if rtl_power is already installed and also how to install and use librtlsdr is this is what I need? Any insight on how to install and run salamandra would be great, thanks!

Hello, leatherneck22; welcome to the forum.

I am also new to this forum, but have been a member of 4 other forums for about 12 years helping with reception problems.

Some of my latest experiments have been with an RTL-SDR.COM V3 dongle and SDRsharp.

Have you used your SDR with SDRsharp yet?

In order to be able to use an RTL-SDR dongle with SDRsharp, it is necessary to click on install-rtlsdr. This will download many items into the same folder including rtl_power and rtl_test.

If you use rtl_test, it is necessary to have your SDR connected to your computer USB port. I was able to find rtl_test in my computer because it is visible in SDRsharp v1715. However, when I use a later version of SDRsharp v1732, it doesn't show because it is buried in a lower layer of the software. It would take a windows terminal to reach it. But, no matter which version of SDRsharp software you have, it will still show if you have rtl_test and rtl_power when you click on install-rtlsdr.

Most of the salamandra instructions show it being run in a Linux shell. I am not familiar with Linux, but I think I might be able to run it in Windows Terminal if I can learn more of the commands.

The only experience I have with GitHub software is with the RTL-SDR scanner software for a spectrum analyzer.

If you don't want to hunt for an old version of SDRsharp that shows rtl_test, it is possible to download RelWithDebInfo:
Manual Installation of SDR#
Manual Installation of SDR#
link to download
https://osmocom.org/attachments/download/2242/RelWithDebInfo.zip

rtl_test7_1.jpg

Extract the zip file and go to rtl_test:

rtl_test8_1.jpg

To repeat what I said earlier, the dongle must be connected to a USB port to run rtl_test.

If you left click on rtl_test once and right click once to Run as Administrator, this is what you will see:

rtl_test9_1.jpg

But if you just double left click on rtl_test, this is what you will see:

rtl_test10_1.jpg

The test shows 1 device found.

I am not smart enough to tell you how to run Salamandra ./salamandra.py:
eldraco/Salamandra

Maybe someone else can help you with that.

You can always hunt for signals with SDRsharp:
