Hi -

Trying to understand how things work. I see a lot of posts, videos, other - discussing these topics as if they are related but unsure if they are or are not. I am a bit confused and feel I have a stupid question but asking anyways.

Recently got OP25 on raspberry pi work for local police scanning for trunked radio. This has been quite educational but now has me asking a lot more questions.

Read / watch a lot on DMR hotspots. Many pages talk as if DMR hotspots and trunked radio is related.

DMR hotspot - assuming you have a DMR, you point it to the radio tower equivalent over the Internet and talk to people you normally would not been able to before. That part makes sense to me.

Now since pages talk about both trunked and DMR - does that mean I can now point to somewhere I am not in range for a county or state on P25 emergency traffic type stuff and receive it through my DMR using my hotspot?

Thanks -
Keith

Note: I do not have a DMR or hotspot at this time. I am just trying to learn.

DMR hotspots can only be used to access other amateur radio locations/users via the internet. Hotspots cannot be used to monitor police or other public safety radio systems. Monitoring such radio systems would require a scanning receiver with the appropriate capabilities (trunked, P25, 800 MHz, etc) to monitor the radio system in question, which must be within radio range (typically, local city or county).

FYI... There is a lot of good information regarding monitoring in the Wiki pages of this site.
