Using Twitter to Share Monitoring Logs
Kelly AE4FG
Using Twitter is a good and immediate method to communicate what we are monitoring. If you hear something interesting, this is a way to share your experience with others.
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others' updates, known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to other users - known as followers - who have subscribed to them.
As a group, we can use Twitter Search to communicate what we are monitoring by adding #tarheelscanner to our tweets. Hash tags or pound signs (#) help to designate the topics for searches.
What is needed to do this?
You don’t need to sign-up for Twitter if you just want to watch messages. Just go to http://search.twitter.com and search for #tarheelscanner. There is an RSS feed that is created from the search if you want to use it.
To send and to automatically search for these messages:
Ø Create a twitter account of your own at: http://twitter.com. Be sure to not select the “Protect my updates” for your account.
Ø If you want automatic updates, install an application that can easily search twitter messages.
Free desktop applications can be used to monitor the #tarheelscanner messages.

What are those special characters I’m seeing? #, @, D, OH, RT
There are different characters that you can include in your tweets to direct messages, etc. Here’s a good article about this and more:

Ø #word – Tags the word for easy searching. Using the pound sign before a word is called a "Hashtag". This is what we’re using for messages directed to the group.
Ø @username – Message intended for username. The @ symbol means that the message is directed to that user, but it is still sent “in the open” for all to see.
Ø d username – Send a message directly to a user. Nobody else will see it.
Ø OH “message” - Tweet something OverHeard. Put the message text in quotes.
Ø RT: - Re-Tweet. Resending a tweet. Give credit to the person who sent the original tweet using @userid in the message.
