Two Contra Costa firefighters, one the captain and the other the engineer, died trying to rescue a couple in a burning home. Their was a sudden explosion of flame in a "flash over" that killed the two fire fighters and the couple as well. It is tough to hear about these incidents, which I first learned about on the local CDF frequency when it was announced that flags are to be lowered to half mast at all CALFIRE facilities and badge shrouds are authorized. This is the first link I found when I did a search:

I, too, first got wind of this at the nearby coffee-shop when I heard Richmond dispatch advise all stations to lower their flags to half-staff. I asked around and nobody had heard anything. A short while later I the news on KCBS.

Being a father of a toddler myself, the news that both firefighters left behind wives and young children makes the news even harder to hear. Station 70 is just a couple miles away from me.

This has been a really bad week for the fire community.

COCO's 2 fatalities
FF Helo crash w/ fatality on the Happy Camp Fire ( USDA Contractor out of Idaho)
2 camp crew fatalities (drowning in a river) on the same Happy Camp Fire

I hate funerals... I loose it when I hear the bagpipes wail. The procession was huge and I saw engine companies from all over California.

Thanks to the agencies and crews who covered for ConFire so the on-duty crews could attend the services.
