They are still out there, apparently. There are better videos concerning the numbers stations (and other mysterious signals) on Youtube, if you can put up with the intrusive ads. I remember hearing the numbers stations regularly when I first got into SW in the late 80's.

Ringway Manchester is a Youtube channel, and he frequently does vids on numbers stations, their history, frequencies, time periods. Great source for anyone interested in these stations ! :giggle:
+1 Could not remember the name of the channel. I watched every video on his channel about a year ago. He also covers pirate radio and strange stations like the Russian "Buzzer" and the 'Squeaky Wheel".

Have you ever tried the Duck Duck Go Browser or the Vivaldi one, too?
Never have. I've been using Firefox w/ Ad Blocker. Google has been defeating ad blockers by inserting the ads directly into the video code (so the ad blocker cannot see the break when the adstarts) and/or blocking video playback (black video screen) until the ad blocker is deactivated. IMHO, Google ruined Youtube.

My Viasat browser has ended and I went with DDG. Its impressive, but Vivaldi although hard (to me) to fathom through it's intricacies, Vivaldi really keeps the pop ups and stupid ads away. DDG doe a very good job too.

Ringway covers a lot of good stuff, and in general I like his videos. They are often well researched and well produced. However, they tend to be a little over the top stressing the mystery of things, or sensationalizing a signal that might have a fairly mundane purpose.

For example (not a complaint about an otherwise pretty good video, just presenting an example of what I mean), yes, at one time (several decades ago) it was put forward that the Buzzer could, just maybe, be a part of some kind of dead-hand system. It was never a well founded or supported idea, but did exist, and was pretty quickly shot down with observational indicators. And it still persist as an idea on the web today (once something is out there on the web, it will continue to periodically come around as "the answer", no matter how many times it gets beat down). In his video on the Buzzer Ringway made sure to mention this "possibility", without going into why it is probable not, and probably never was, a thing.

Of course, this kind of thing is almost necessary to drive clicks and feed the algorithm. If Ringway wants to grow his subscriber base he has to do something that causes people to click, and certain types of titles and sensational suggestions will do that.

True, he does amp up the melodrama a bit with the mysterious music, voice-over narrative, etc, no doubt trying to lure those who are into intrigue but not radio hobbyists. However, unlike many videos with their obnoxious music and constantly flashing images, his can watched late at night while trying to fall asleep.

That "dead hand" theory about The Buzzer does persist, but I'll admit that theory did pull me into researching more about it.

Sounds interesting. If you find it's on somewhere, post an update. In Bridge of Spies set in the 1950's, the Russian spy living in the US is depicted as receiving a coded message by radio. Chances are you've seen it but if not, highly recommended.

In the land of pot heads and hobos Colorado I heard the Cuban numbers station in full quieting on an Icom IC-R3 with stock antenna.
It had a powerhouse signal and could be received easily even on a cheap portable. Insulting an entire state was not necessary to this discussion.
