• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have an idea for using an FRS radio to transmit a very short (1 second or so) signal to signal an event, such as motion detection, flooding, over/under temperature, light/dark detection, etc. Would this be legal to do? I know it is legally done on MURS frequencies. MURS if often used for driveway/gate activity detection.

You could probably do this using a Part-15 device, but there are very strict limitations on such a device. Things like no interference with licensed users, extremely low power levels, short distances for coverage are just a few. For driveway gate activation it would probably be simpler and more reliable to use a buried wire connection (after all, you will already need power so just run some control cables and you'll be all set). You could probably also do something pretty simple (and cover a wider range of events) using a small computer in a waterproof box with a wifi connection back to where you will want to monitor those events (perhaps using a directional antenna for better range and less chance of intrusion).

Examples of some events you could monitor this way is full gate status (open, closed, moving, stopped but not at an end point, etc.), temp (72.5 degrees outside, motor temp 94.2 degrees, etc.), flooding (perhaps with multiple sensors this could include area a, area b, etc. or even level 1, level 2, etc.), motion detection (like the flooding could include multiple sensors if desired), let your mind wander since your options are only limited by the number of sensor connections on your control box(es).

For some of these functions you can probably purchase off-the-shelf devices to cover them. Things such as the Davis (https://www.davisinstruments.com/weather-monitoring/) line of weather centers, especially their agriculture line, (cover the temp pretty easily (it may say indoor and outdoor, but you'll know it really is for outside and motor), and with some add-on devices you can do the flooding, light/dark, etc.. For a lower cost (but you'll be more limited on what you can easily monitor out-of-the-box) their lower end/lower cost models can do part of what you need so you'll need to have less customized for you. The Davis devices use part-15 transmissions from the sensor(s) to the display station (as an example of what part-15 can do for you).

LYNX is a manufacturer of low powered ISM band . There are options for 433 MHz and 900 MHz . With some clever design these can be far more useful than a hacked FRS radio.
