To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Unication G5 scan multiple systems?

I am trying to learn more about Unication. Very familiar with Systems and Talkgroups while using my SDS-100.

Can a G-5 scan multiple "Groups"???? Like an SDS-100 can scan multiple Favorite Lists? Interested in scanning P-25 700/800 AND... VHF Conventional simultaneously.
Also want to be able to monitor two different P-25 systems at same time.

Thanks!

A Unication G5 is a pager not a scanner and has limitation. You can only scan one system at a time per knob position, and you can not scan conventional freqs at the same time as a system. Additionally, without the use of wildcards you can only scan a max of 64 TGs per knob position at a time.

I have the G-5. You can’t scan P-25 and conventional simultaneously. That is what the SDS-100 is for. But I can say that the P-25 systems come in much better on the G-5.

Some slightly inaccurate statements being thrown around here.

You *can* scan P25 Conventional and analog (FM) conventional systems on a scanning knob position.

You cannot scan a combination of a P25 *trunked* system and any other system (including another P25 trunked one).

Is there a maximum number of conventional channels that can go in a single knob position?

OP: Most of the high level ins and outs of these pagers is in the wiki. I know, not anyone's first thought...not expecting anyone to just stumble onto it. But have done my best to make it a helpful page. Recently added a detailed comparison table G1 thru G5 pagers.

A few more caveats:
  • G2/G4 are single-band (only external antenna). G3/G5 are dual-band (internal antenna + external antenna).
  • External antenna generally has better reception. ie in our agency, depending how far a guy is located we'll issue a G3 vs G5 solely based on if they need the external antenna. If you're scanning a large number of frequencies though, you may not have this luxury.
  • You can add Radio IDs/Aliases, but they won't show up if you're in 2-tone mode. The list is limited to 999 ID's. You'll have to type each one in...no import from excel feature yet.
  • Pager can hold 256 digital channels or 516 analog, or a mixture of both.
  • A knob position, scanning a single trunked site, can scan a maximum of 64 Talkgroups in that knob position. The only workaround is designating a wildcard.
  • You have 8 knob positions (top of radio). In any knob position, max of 16 frequencies. All 8 positions correspond to a "Zone". You can switch between Zones, which takes a few seconds (software toggle), then the 8 knob positions become whatever's programmed in the newly chosen Zone. Max of 64 Zones can be programmed.
  • DMR is conventional only. Also, a $25 add-on fee. If you have a pager w/out it, will need to mail it in.
  • The pagers do not support Motorola Smartnet/SmartZone Analog, EDACS, LTR, NXDN, or DMR Trunking.

No being able to scan both Trunking and conventional is a collosial deal breaker for me. Too many mixed PS systems in my area.
The more you scan the more you miss.
In a situation like yours use the G4 for the trunking systems and good handheld like an xts3000 or XTS2500 for the conventional stuff. This way you get more devices to scan dedicated stuff.

I “thought” the Unication “scanner feature firmware upgrade” would allow that. I guess it’s not the solution.

I guess my SDS100 still takes the win when it comes to scanning.

Maybe at some point, the Unication designers will make all this possible.

Never say never.

There is no such upgrade generally available. There was a "beta" made available to select applicants a while back (over a year), but that project appears to have fizzled out.

It's really the only option if simulcast systems are involved.

Maybe ;)

Adding to this: even the beta scanner firmware (v1.40) doesn't scan trunked and conventional channels within the same knob position.

I'd like to get the new firmware if possible. Is it still being tested or whats going on with it.

It was in limited beta assigned based on the model number of the pager to those who originally signed up, and is no longer available. Unication appears to have stopped support for it.

Here and there
I'd imagine with chip issues and other market issues around world they have delayed it since the whole covid 19 thing.
