Which scanner is recommended for monitoring Northampton and Lehigh County. Also for Medevac and Penn Star.
Thanks!

I own the 325P2 and SDS200.

The only advantage to the SDS is that it works better in Simulcast environment.

I only see 3 Simulcast sites on STARNET in PA:

Locals can advise you better.

The 325P2 is a great scanner and has an awesome receiver. It's also 1/2 the price.

Good luck!

These counties & the medevac agencies you mentioned are all analog. Take your pick. I used a Uniden BCT15X to monitor Delaware County when I lived there (all analog). Was a solid performer

Allentown and Bethlehem both use P25 systems. You need a P25 Phase 2 digital scanner for them. Allentown (Project 25) Trunking System, Allentown, Pennsylvania - Scanner Frequencies (radioreference.com) Bethlehem Public Safety Trunking System, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - Scanner Frequencies (radioreference.com)

The SDS models also have a much larger memory, so they can take the entire RR database for North America. Coupled with GPS, it's far better for traveling. The 325 can only be programmed for a relatively small geographic area before you run out of space.

Yeah, at nearly twice the price, the SDS scanners are great.

But the 325P2 will work fine for you.

I've never heard anyone report that they were out of space.

Here are the specs:

325P2 Features and Specs

Very easy to run out of space. I can't even load all my unit ID's for Ohio Marcs. Nor without UID can I load all of Marcs. Although reception is great , imho it's useless if you need a large statewide system loaded.

Note - I have a 325 and a 996P2 - but I have to be selective what goes in there.

Ohio MARCS is a huge statewide system, I have 122 systems, 206 sites, and 6442 channels in my 325P2. Only 23% of the memory is in use. If you want a scanner for your county and surrounding counties, the 325P2 has plenty of memory. If you plan to do a lot of travelling, a scanner with a SD card and GPS is required.

It's not so much the total memory that is the limitation, but the limits on talkgroups per system, sites per system, etc. They preclude loading a statewide system in its entirety, such as WV-SIRN, VA-STARS, etc. The only limits on the x36 and SDS models are 1MB per favorite list, and 255 favorite lists. And those limits don't apply to the main database.

You can only have 20 channel groups (MARCS has 229)
Only 500 channels per trunking system (Marcs has 5051)
