I have a uniden 396 and not to long ago the powerplug quit working. I bought a new one and it still doing the same thing. The only way I can keep power to it is by changing the double A batteries. Any ideas on what might be going on. Did I change a setting or switch that I did not know I was doing?

There's a little switch in the battery compartment. One position is for AA batteries and one is for rechargeable.

If you are using rechargeable batteries, you need to select the appropriate setting, otherwise the batteries will not recharge. The switch is there to prevent regular alkaline batteries from getting current from the recharger when plugged in.

Hope this helps.

If the switch doesnt work then its a problem with the charging circuit or the ac adapter.
A few people have had this problem (normally from plugging in an incorrect voltage adapter)

Can you power the radio with no batteries in it with the adapter?

I think that is what he is asking about, the AC adapter is no longer powering his radio.
Since he has replaced it, my guess is something inside of the radio might have burned up and this requires a trip to the Uniden shop for repair.

UH OH. I do not like the trip to the uniden shop idea

I put rechargeable batteries in last night and turned the switch away from alkaline. Nothing happened, could not get the thing to come on period. Yes I did have it plugged in. I was just using some Energizer rechargeable batteries. Did I put the wrong batteries in? Any more ideas.

All that little switch does is turn on the charging circuit to the rechargeable batteries, it doesn't have to be
in that position for rechargeables to work in your scanner. I leave mine in the Alkaline position all the time, mainly because I power my radio in the car with the car adapter. I don't want it to charge my batteries while I drive to and from work. I always charge my batteries externally, just to keep from burning up my radio. I feel safer that way, a lot of people charge their batteries in their scanners, I just had to save a long time to even purchase mine. I don't want to have to send it in either so I just don't do it.
I use Energizer batteries also, so you don't have wrong batteries.
Sorry to say, but I still think a trip to the shop is in order.

No, the radio will not power at all without the batteries in. I guess I need to go to the repair shop. Any ideas of the best place to take it.

Now you know why many of us recommend NOT using an A/C adapter to run your portable scanner. It is far better to use two or three sets of batteries and a charger.
Many others scoff at this approach, but you will never again have that problem if you use only batteries.

Also, if the radio works OK with batteries, you don't need to pay for the repair.

I use my power port quite frequently...Other than the initial problem I documented in my post, no problems whatsoever...Evertime I get into my car with the radio it gets plugged in..so pretty much daily....I have no fears at all about using the power port...That's what it's there for....Changing batteries is an annoyance, so I use ac power whenever available/convenient...
