I have been trying to reprogram my scanner and also to do some searching using the computer features. I keep getting communications errors. The software is not seeing the computer. This is the same computer that I have used to program it before. I have also tried changing the communications settings with no luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Might help if we knew what software. Have you tried to get the latest version of software? Cable may also be at fault. Try wiggling the connectors.

check your "com"" ports so that the computer can talk to the scanner. in computer talk, and the software will recognize the scanner. if it can go wrong, it will!.

This is what I would do:
1) Go to the Windows Device Manager and verify the USB adapter is working. Write down the USB adapter port number assignment.
2) Set up the scanner PC control. MENU -> 3: SYSTEM CONTROL -> 5: PC CONTROL. Set the scanner baud rate to 57600.
3) Go to the software and set the baud rate to 57600 and the port number from step 1.

Something that would cause me grief when programming the 796 was the Baud rate setting on the scanner.

Scanner baud rate has to match the software baud rate.

The Windows Device Manager properties for the adapter has settings for baud rate, date bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control. Those don't have any effect and do not need to be changed.
