• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hey guys,

If you press the RF GAIN button, a LOCAL indicator appears on the display. I understand what RF gain is supposed to do, but what does this mean when its displayed (and not displayed)?

Local means either the RF gain is at minimum or there is an attenuation in circuit.

Thank you. So with that being said, I guess the absence of this indication shows it’s allowing the reception of more distant signals. Thanks again.

If you hold the button down for a few seconds (within 10) it will bring up the adjustment menu. Use the channel knob to change it. Press said button again to exit. You are right about the light, when it’s on, it’s limiting incoming signals. When it’s off it’s “wide open”.

Ah, I see, looks like I got it figured out now. Still trying to figure out this neat little radio, but have zero complaints so far. Even figured out how to get rid of the loud "key beep". Thanks again for the help there!

Your welcome. I have only one complaint so far (because I’m old school) is some of the adjustments on the radio are set values, not infinitely adjustable. The pros defiantly out weigh the cons. I have talked well over 300 miles bare foot with this radio on 38LSB and with reports of “ sounds like your in my driveway”. Stock mic too

Wow happy to hear. I was meaning to ask about SSB. I hear lots of people talk about 38 Lower. Is that kind of like the informal "Channel 19 AM"? I've been itching to try some SSB contacts but not sure if there's a "common" channel , so to speak. Just looking to increase my chances of finding someone on SSB to shoot the crap with. Thanks again for the friendly advice.

Its mainly what others in your area talk on, but the “calling channel” on sideband is 38 LSB. I’ve personally talked from Texas to Rhode Island, across Canada and even Alaska once from st.louis. All on a 980 with A99 and about 175 “helpers”. I’m waiting for the weather to break and stay dry so I can put up my new antenna setup. My last one toppled in the yard and My brother came over and did not see it under the snow. Now I have 2 Antron antenna, one has a broken bottom section and the other is ready to mount

Back to the point, my locals talk 23AM. I’m close to a few major highways so I can almost always get someone on 19 AM. 38LSB is the long distance channel for me. The bearcat has a scan function. Use it and see where the activity is. All it does is flip through channels until one breaks the squelch, it will pause then continue.

Good deal, yeah I've been using the scan feature on the USB / LSB when I get board of the usual AM 19 debauchery, haha. Since you have been more than helpful, I have one more question about the clarifier. On the "course" knob, I can feel a slight detent, or default position in its movement near the middle of its travel. However on the "fine" knob, I can't feel a detent. Is the default position for the clarifier all the way to the left (like the squelch and volume)?

I hope that makes any sense at all, and thanks a million good sir!

Glad I can help, the fine clarifier knob is like the Course knob, but the lack of a detent helps with getting exactly on where you want and not listening to a bunch of people that are high pitched.

Understood. So I guess the Coarse knob's default position is at the detent in the center, and the Fine knob's default position is full-left? Many thanks.

If you have a new version 980 there is a push and hold button that kills that beep. Id have to read a manual but i think its the anl nb button.google search both early and late versions.easy to tell them apart.older version you have to open and lift a leg on a doide or something.cant remember but im about to download how to do it and shut that beep off in my early 980

Yeah, that beep is annoying...I have 2 of the older 980s and my only complaint as it’s a fine radio otherwise. Mine sits on top of my GE Superbase and depending on my mood dictates which one I use.
