Hi, I'm new to the forums and to trunking radios. Our county has converted from analog to Phase 1 digital frequencies. I'm looking at radios and need an opinion as to which scanner to buy: the Uniden BCD996P2 or the Whistler 1065. Is one radio better than the other one? Any advice is appreciated and thank you in advance.

i prefer the Whistler.i have a GRE 600 which is basically the 1065's predecessor and i find the decoding and audio are superior to the Uniden, for my location anyways.

As to P25 digital decode on some of these older Motorola trunked systems The older GRE 600 and the Whislter 1065 works way better than Uniden by far. I still love my 1065 radio. I use it everyday

Now I'm confused. How about the Whistler 1095? I don't see a keypad on this model....is it still programmable?

I have a 996p2 and it runs circles around my Whistler built scanner. Yes I own both the Whistler has a problem receiving in strong signal areas also the 996p2 is a P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 scanner the Whistler 1065 is P25 Phase 1 only

It still suffers from frontend overload in high rf areas as do all Whistler built scanners. If you live closer than 10 miles from a fm radio station , paging tower , cell tower , tv station , or any other transmitter then Whistler has problems in my testing. If you are in the middle of nowhere it might hear a little better.

Is the 1095 programmable, or does it rely on strictly the database and SD card like the Uniden Home Patrol models? I see that the 1065 has a keypad, but the 1095 doesn't? I don't want to be limited to the database---our county's database is not complete, so the new frequencies are not even on there yet. That's why we returned the Home Patrol.

THIS ... all about location, location, location.

Even some hams here with decades of time under them do not believe this .. but this is the truth.

And yes the Uniden scanners perform substantially better when the cookies are down.:wink:

The 1095 is programmable, but is much more complex than a keyboard model. Between the 1095 and the 1098, get the 1098 that has the keyboard.

+1 on the overload issues. GRE has been that way for decades. But, they are generally more sensitive than Uniden models (which is part of what causes that problem) so may work better in rural areas.

Umm .. sorry dude but the HomePatrol can totally be programmed with whatever you like, not at all restricted. If you returned it .. your loss.

There is a new Whistler WS-1098 model coming out in the next week or two with a keyboard. But otherwise .. much the same as the 1095. And yes ... they are all totally programmable.

Edmscan I tried to ramble and let the OP see the Whistler would be good IF IN A LOW RF AREA otherwise the Uniden would be a better choice and yes the new WS-1098 would be a better choice over the WS-1095. The old 10 channel Regency crystal scanners had overload problems as well.
I wish Whistler Wendy would get remote control software working for the new WS-1098 I would be tempted to play with one.
