Evening, folks! I've been doing some research on some of the Uniden scanners specifically for use at the track, scanning NASCAR races. It seems like the Uniden SC-230 is the obvious choice for me, but I've now run into the trouble of figuring out how well they function without some type of amplifier. Posts like the one below that I found using the search here seem to confirm there is a problem:

Some other sites I've seen are selling modified versions of other scanner models with a tag labeled "AUDIO MODIFIED - This Uniden Scanner does not have sufficient audio output at the headset connection. This scanner has been modified internally to increase the volume through the headset connection. ($15 value)" However, these sites don't offer the SC-230. So I'm unsure if it is even necessary.

Others offer an amplifier like the one below, but it is difficult to tell how bulky it is, and I can't find a review anywhere. There's also the aspect of having one other problem -- adding one additional bulky accessory to a list of items that already includes a headset, scanner, and 2-way radio.

Racing Electronics - #1 Source For Professional Race Communications - Online Store

Any thoughts on any of these products or prior experience with the SC-230 or other race scanners? Most of the reviews and information I've seen have come from the 2005 timeframe. Any other products out there that boost sound easily?

Thanks for the help!

I have had no problem using one at Texas Motor Speedway, but do use high-isolation headphones (like they wear in the pits). The high-isolation headphones allow me to have the scanner audio at a comfortable level (not dangerous for hearing loss).

What the mods and external amplifiers are trying to make up for is a lack of noise isolation in inexpensive headphones.

I will be using the legacy headset from racing electronics. They seem to have quality stuff. Is that what you would considers good enough model to use without amplification?

I've used my SC230 at many races without any issues. I use a headset from RS that is plenty loud enough without being turned all the way up.

Yes, the legacy style is the type I mean (and you can usually also tell from the price).
