Program the local NOAA weather radio freq into your scanner. If it comes in clearly then your scanner is working ok. This would also mean you most likely don't have the correct railroad freqs programmed in your scanner. Often, the yard/switching channels may be obscure so you should program all freqs (not just the mainline channels) listed for the railroad you wish to monitor.

Mike, can you program a limit search? If so just put in 160.215 for your low freq. and 161.565 for your high freq. Sit around the yard and see what pops up-----you might be surprised! Also as Paul said try the NOAA weather channel first, just to make sure the scanner is ok. Good luck , Mike

Stick all the AAR channels into a bank and scan them for a few days, making a note of who is talking to who. You'll know what RR it is, since the company names, crew names and dispatch locations are given during track warrants, etc.

Just a thought.

Is it a possibility that maybe UP in that yard is digital? I know in some areas railroads are trying out digital technology. I believe Union Pacific was one of them. Is it also a possbility that they are trunking. I know there are railroads that have tried that too. What yard is the one that you go to (City also), maybe we can help you out.

I am sitting in the former CNW yard In Worthington Mn it is now under UP managment I have the codes givin at the begining of the thread in there and the codes that we have on the base at the rr club probly 20 miles away but I still am sitting within probly 30 feet(in a parking lot) of the brakemen watching him talk on his hand held and nuttin doing, but I put in the local police freq to see if it is picking anything up and I get that loud and clear??
I can also listen in on the weather radio with no prob

Since you can receive the police and weather ok, then you probably still don't have the correct frequency programmed in your scanner. Keep trying! Also, If your scanner has a search feature, try programming a search from: 160.215 as the lower limit and 161.565 as the upper limit. This will allow your scanner to search the entire railroad band.

Try AAR 1414 (160.320). This is the yard channel on much of the former CNW system. The road channel is the previously mentioned AAR 6262 (161.040). The Worthington Sub is far from an active stretch of railroad, so you probably won't be hearing constant radio traffic.

well i looked at the time table for that area, on the Worthington sub the road ch is 6262, its all TWC in that area, but it says nothing about a diffrent yard ch. I have the time table if you need it.

Timetables don't usually list channels other than the road channel unless there is a major yard. The yard channels are just known by the area crews. The nearest UP towers to Worthington are near Windom, MN; Superior, IA; and Sheldon, IA.

- Windom only operates on 161.040 (62).
- Superior tower operates on 160.485 (25), 160.575 (31), 160.455 (23) and 161.175 (71).
- The Sheldon Tower operates on 160.455 (23) and 161.040 (62).

Nothing like joining the thread 11 years late. I imagine the OP found what he was looking for but in case not, the mainline fq on the UP Worthington Sub is 161.040. The mainline fq for BNSF on the Marshall Sub (Willmar to Sioux City) is 161.160. The Corson Sub (Garretson to Sioux Falls) is 161.100. The Sioux Falls Depot/Yard was on 160.650 when I used to get over there years ago.

The Ellis & Eastern bought the line from Agate to Manley (Worthington, Luverne, etc) last year and were going to connect it to their track in Sioux Falls. Not sure if they were able to do that yet or not. They operate on 160.800 on the Minnesota trackage. Think they use something different in SD, not sure.
