I'm having an intermittent issue with unit ID alerts on a P25 Phase I/Phase II system.

In Sentinel I've entered a number of the local fire brigade's radio IDs & Unit IDs with an alert tone set for each, and written the update to an SDS200.

When they talk to the dispatcher, their correct unit IDs are displayed, but the alert tone does not always happen. Sometime it does, sometimes it doesn't.

The fact that the correct UID appears on the display suggests that correct correlation is happening with the radio ID.

Thinking it might be a timing issue between looking up the radio ID in a list of many for this fire district & the dispatcher responding, I have deleted all except the local brigade (so I only have a grand total of 5 radio IDs-UID in the list).

No change - sometimes the alert happens, more often not.

I'm at a loss as to why the alert function is intermittent.

If the tg has an audible alert, it would take priority over a uid alert. Don't know if that helps in your case.

It's the same issue in DMR systems. It might be that the UID alert only works if that UID are the initial one when a conversation starts. It would be very annoying if a audio alert sounds each time a user uses his transmit button. So it probably needs the conversation to leave the voice channel and go to the control channel to reset the timer to make the alert active again and then only do one alert.

There are probably some logical function to it in the firmware but have some kind of bug that makes it not trigger at all. Try and write a flow diagram how the UID alerts should work and include control channel, TG grant, TG delay, check for alert being programmed to the TG, if retrigger alert when already active, If doing alert for both UID, if it does an alert when a new UID gets active late in the TG call and all that sort of functionality and it will probably be a very complex order of instructions that the firmware needs to do to know when to trigger the alert and when not to do it.

As it is now it probably have some function to not disturb a user too much with repetitive alerts and it's probably a personal thing how often you would like alert tones to sound during a conversation and if it doesn't activate the alert at all it will probably be a firmware bug but are so complicated to solve that they do not touch it. They will have a meeting and ask how many more scanners will we sell if we spend hours on this bug.

Many thanks for the explanation.

While I did a search here before posting, for some reason I missed this one, so it seems a known issue:
