My particular listening interest is the San Diego Zoo’s UHF radio traffic. (See “Monitoring the Wild Side” in the June 2012 issue of MONITORING TIMES.) Last May, JoeyC helped me identify two of the Zoo’s primary frequencies (Security and Animal Services), which were recently changed from what’s in the database. Since then, I have spent a number of hours on the Zoo grounds, using the “close call” feature on my little SC230 scanner to identify additional frequencies that are actively being used by the Zoo:
451.8375 pl 114.8 Security/Shuttle dispatch
453.5500 pl 114.8 Security 2
452.2625 pl 114.8 Animal Services
464.5750 Skyfari
453.0000 Buildings and Grounds
452.4500 Education
There are no doubt other frequencies that are in active use. (I’m still searching for the frequency used by “Bus Base” to dispatch and communicate with the Zoo’s tour buses.)
As was pointed out in an earlier discussion thread, the Zoo will eventually be switching over to a MOTOTRBO trunked system. (The cost to replace all of the radios used by the Zoo’s personnel might be a factor in delaying this switch.)
