Update to do what? Seems last time I used one it didn't need any changes/improvements. I don't think Uniden is supporting this model anymore.

The only update promised by Uniden for this (and the 796D) was an update to accommodate rebanding on Motorola 800 MHz TRS'. As they have not yet issued any firmware updates for this yet, and only at the beginning of this month was the method Motorola used confirmed, I would not expect to see any firmware updates for rebanding for another 30+ days.

The 296 is no longer current or supported (as far as I know)...
Other then re-banding (good point Lou) I doubt you will see any firmware upgrades.

Many thanks for the responses. The radio works fine and i was concerned only with the rebanding stuff and whether or not Uniden will follow through with what has been initially said.
