To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an old Motorola XPR4550 with firmware 01.00.00. Does anyone have any idea how I can update it to the latest firmware? The update package I have from MOL will only update radios with R01.06.20 and higher, and I can't find anything on MOL about how to get a radio up to R01.06.20. Any help would be much appreciated - thanks!

You could have a development radio which would most likely not be able to update the firmware. Does the serial number have a "D" in it?

Thanks for the reply! No "D" in the serial number, it is actually R01.00.01, not .00. The update package I have says there is no package that matches the device which I assume is because I need to update it to R01.06.20 first, but there is no update on MOL to do that any more (interestingly, though, there is a reposted one to update repeaters to R01.06.20. I think if I had the earlier update package it would probably work...

What version of CPS are you using? What error message are you getting?

The D would appear in the firmware version if that was a developmental radio. Instead of R01.00.01, it would have D01.00.01.

I'll check what firmware I've got but I don't believe I've got anything old enough that will help.

Thank you! Definitely not "D". If I go to Device -> Update with the rado connected it waits a while then says "No matching package(s) exist". I can program it fine, though. CPS version is 8.5 (Build 429)

If you're trying to load 1.11.10 you'll need CPS v8.6. Anything less and you will get the "No matching ..." error.

As thassler mentioned, use CPS v8.6. You will be able to update the radio to the lastest downloaded firmware.

Be sure to use the Motorola programming cable, too.

It needs to be bumped in two-three steps.

I believe the first bump takes it to 1.3x then another to 1.6 then finally current.

The older trbo firmware files you needed the one specific to the model you were updating.

I checked my firmware files and unfortunately I don't have anything old enough to help.

Beautiful! I just upgraded to CPS 8.6, and installed the full update to R01.11.10 smoothly - it worked a dream. Thanks so much for the help - you saved me from having a brick! I owe you all a beer :)
