Brand new to the Forum and to Scanners - just got my BCD996P2 yesterday. I've also got the 'freescan' software downloaded, along with a bunch of local frequencies.

It "appears" that the USB cable has the PL-2303 chip - Correct? No mention of it in the Owners manual, nor any Drivers for it. I managed to find a couple of Driver Installers online - V1.6 and V1.10. Have tried them both with no joy, even though they both do say that they support Win XP.

I did manage to get it to show up once in Device Manager, but Not as a Comm Port - It was in 'Other Devices'. (I've tried so many combo's I'm not sure, but Believe that it happened when I installed the drivers while the cable and unit were connected to a USB port.) That still didn't work so I did do an Uninstall. Have re-booted "multiple" times (to say the least).

Any INFO, hints, tips, tricks, advice or pointers to some Help would be GREATLY appreciated!

TIA!

There is a special driver required to be installed for the 996p2 and it can be found on the uniden website. Install the driver first then hook up the scanner and usb cable and all should be good.

Thanks, Doc. I've been searching, attempting to load, uninstalling, re-booting and re-trying for 1 1/2 days now. I "Believe" that all of these instructions are for at least Win 7, but the ScannerMaster link may be the closest.

As mentioned, I did get it to show once as "Other Devices", but hadn't yet seen the SM instructions about then applying the Drivers. Removing it from there was a big boo-boo, I think. Now to get it showing back there, if I knew how I did it! :-D It MAY have been booting the PC with the scanner still connected??? That'll be my next attempt.

Meanwhile, every time I plug in the USB cable (after a Driver install), I get the 'pop up bubble' saying "New Hardware Found and may not work correctly", but it's nowhere to be seen in Device Manager. Frustrating and time consuming. :-(

Will update later today with any progress.

Thanks! I've got that file here. Along with at least 1/2 dozen other files and installers. ;-) My biggest problem seems to be finding the scanner in Device Manager - it almost Never shows up (see above reply) to do anything else with it, like applying the Drivers.

Will let you folks know later on today.

Thanks again,

Phil

No Joy yet, but a tiny bit closer. I've got the Device now showing, can go to the Update or Reinstall Drivers, select the Uniden Driver Directory (where I unzipped that Uniden <.cat> file), and the "OK" button then activates like it sees something good. ;-)

It 'processes' for several seconds while backing up Registry settings, etc. and then comes back with the error - Insufficient system resources...
So much for Plug and Play... :) Been 48 hours now, except for eating and sleeping a bit, this has been my "project". Aaarrgghh.

Have done some research on that Win XP "resources" error and looks like maybe some Windows Registry edits??? Yeow! Any other ideas before doing that???
