• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm wanting to get a USB to serial adapter for programming the motorola radios we have that didn't come with a USB programming cable. I'd rather just go buy the same adapter that is already working for someone here. The radio's I'll be programming are the HT750's and 1250's, CDM mobiles, and P1225's.
So if someone could give me the make and model of one that is working for them now, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I might add, the Sabrent (and probably most) USB/Serial devices assign a virtual COM port. Some of these can have a high port number so make sure your application will support these. Example, my laptop assigns ports COM-5 through COM-8.

i have a standard old Belkin USB/Serial adapter and never had an issue with it on everything from Windows ME to Windows 7 and every type of CPS for US products.

if your machine assigns a high port number, you should be able to go in the device manager and change it. i always set mine to com 1, never had an issue that way, because sometimes com 5+ is squirrelly with older CPS versions.

We used some USB adapters to program XTL 5000s and found that we had to slow down the speeds to allow the computer to talk to the radio. The XTLs at least were very picky on com speeds and in some cases we couldn't communicate at all. We were using 3 XP machines to program 1500 radios. The biggest problem we had was with the flash upgrades. Fortunately, we had one computer with RS 232.

I've used and still use the IOGear GUG232A. It's always worked well enough to get the job done but anything that is very error sensitive may have issues.

Nothing will beat a real RS232 port. I bought a socket pcmcia rs232 port and I use it for everything requiring a serial port. The computer I use has a serial port built in, but it is a dell and for some reason, dell's serial ports don't work correctly.

Those of you using Windows 7 64bit for programming radios, get another laptop. They are cheap, you should be able to get a Windows XP laptop for under $100 on eBay or a pawn shop. I value my radios enough to use proper equipment to program them.
