What some have said, bad practice might be true but in my case, the local repeater that I talk on, its only in two places in the entire state. East side and west side.. If a group is going to a hamfest , and chatting back and forth, if one gets out of the repeater range with an ht, while others are using more power, with mobile antennas, going reverse, or direct, announcing you are on xxxx direct is the only thing you can do with an ht. The group switches to the repeater on direct, simplex, but we bother no one like if we went to the normal simplex and interrupt some "good ol boys" round table as we drive down the road. If there is only one other operator, going reverse solves the problem. There are time when I want to make a comment, to those around and do not want the comment going to the masses via the repeater, quickly going to the output simplex solves the problem. Drop to low power, make a comment, then go back to high power or whatever is required to use the repeater. These are not normal actions but in a pinch, you adapt and overcome. Many times the ht can hear the repeater but the ht does not have enough go power to get into the repeater.
