It's all simplex stuff, but there's a movie being filmed in Sacramento this week and next. "Valley of Light". You'll have to be close to the American River near Watt or Howe Ave. (as that's where the filming is taking place).

I have worked on and monitored several movie locations. Because of the sound and possible RF interference from a radio that could interupt filming, most are turned off during filming. Or users are wearing a headset or earpiece. You will hear alot when there is no actual shooting. Craft services (Food) asking for more of whatever they are low on. Transportion asking about placement of vehicles, Security asking if joe schmoe can visit the set??? You will hear depending on the movie some really cool stuff. During the filming of MAD City (Hoffman/Travolta) I heard director Costa Gravas talking to a helicopter that was hovering 75 feet over the street, that was cool.
"I need you lower! better shot" Pilot or crew responded "If we go any lower we will be landing.."
it was like this all night, then they would say "que rain" and water would shoot from pipes and make it rain.

actually, you'll hear "lock it up!" "roll sound" "sound speed" "Speed" "and we are ROLLING" and then you won't hear anything on there for a good 5 or 10 minutes, than you'll hear cut, and normal converastions will return.

the most interesting channel is always channel 1 (which it sounds like locations is channel 1). that's the production channel. thats where everything goes down. the rest is pretty much gaffers, grips, camera support, and sound, etc.

Bill,

Have you ever monitored any movie shoots at all???
Yes. This one. My job brought me onto the set, and gave me a radio. Am I an expert? No. Just in case anyone was bored and wanted to listen in...why the three question marks???
