Has anyone tried one of the new Samsung made 3G Network Extenders that Verizon is selling now?

Where i live its 1X and anything other than voice sucks, you cant hardly send a text message some days let along a picture message. But if i drive to a neighboring town that is EVDO then it works great.

Verizon support told me that if i got one of the newer models that came out recently it would supplement my data use as well, the old ones were only good for voice, so that my phone would show EV rather than just 1X when using the extender.

I live about half mile or so from the only cell site in the area, the next closest is about twelve miles, and even that one is non-3g as well. We beg and plead for years but still no 3g coverage. And we can't switch carriers because there is nobody to switch to. Unicel sorta works in these parts but still runs off the one and only tower so we would still have the same service so whats the point.

Verizon techs have been to this tower site many times in the last year, its a real duct tape and bailing wire operation. I talked to the guys a few times and they always tell me they are hardly authorized to spend money on the site let alone do any upgrades to it. So i don't see it happening, and after 3-4 years that the tower has been up nothing has been done.

Anyway, if anyone has one of the newer extenders tell me how it does. I don't need mobile web, i have my computers for that, i just want the ability to send and receive text and multimedia messages reliably. I can't do anything to improve the signal, its five bars in my basement, signal isnt an issue, the service provided by this tower is.

They did say they would drop the price of the extender from the normal $249.99 to $150.00 with a rebate for me since its a service issue and they admit to it being a problem here. But $150 is still a lot to spend unless i know its totally worth it.

I have one, and it is awesome. I live in the middle of no where so cell service is non-existent, but we do have high speed internet, so this was the perfect choice. The one thing I don't like is that you cant send or receive MMS messages, such as pictures or audio files via text. For some reason it doesn't have 3g built in. But otherwise it does exactly what it says it will. Also, you must have the gps antenna placed well, with a very clear view of the sky otherwise the whole unit won't work at all. When we got it, they did take the price way down. It was only $99 for us. Great deal.

Sounds like verizon doesn't want to pay for more T1 lines to the site.

Exactly... I did a little snooping through some techs that i know who work for the local Telco... They said that there is only one line to the site and they are a lower tier service also. Figures!

You must have the older version then, or they are blowing smoke up my butt... Because they said its 3g on the one they are selling now. These just started selling a few months ago so maybe you have the older version?

Look at the one on the Verizon site now, see if it looks the same, cause i have seen the older ones on ebay and they have a totally different case style.

They are offering one for $150, i will probably end up getting one. I have high speed internet, 20Mb cable service, the fastest available in my area so i don't have a problem using an extender but its still the principle of the matter ya know??

Scott - I guess this one below is the one you are talking about.

You may want to hold out for the 4G rollout coming soon supposedly - see below.

Yeah i won't hold my breath there, thanks for the info, but 4g around here?? LMAO!!!! We have been waiting five years for 3g, unlike most of the rest of the country there is none here.

I have to drive 30-40 miles to get 3g service. I would be totally happy with a 3g extender though, all i need is reliable text and MMS messaging, i don't care about any other service and don't even have wireless web on my phone by choice.

That is the 3g extender they want to sell me. For $150 i might just give in and get one, but its still going to be like $200 once i add tax and shipping and then a roll of cat cable and hub to patch into my network, all ports maxxed out already on my current two routers, yes two routers, lots of devices in my house. LOL

I think you will be waiting a while for a 4g version of the extender, but i could be wrong. They just released the 3g version this year, i think it was june or july that it came out on the website, dont remember for sure now.

I wish they would come out with the 4g version though, then maybe i can find a 3g version for cheap on ebay! The non-3g ones on ebay do about $100-$150 used.

Yeah you're probably right. When the first one came out I jumped at it. But you know how fast electronics are advanced, once you buy something new, a day later- they already have a newer version out...

A T1? Seriously? A T1 wouldnt run one blackberry... Not even close.

I looked into an extender, but I didnt want to pay to extend Verizon's network...

If you look, there are some strange things with these femtocell's that verizon sells.

1.) No way to limit access... Anybody can eat up your bandwidth with their cell phone. There is a way to give your own phones "Priority"

2.) It still uses voice minutes and IIRC Data too, which makes absolutely no sense in my opinion.

I was told it doesnt use minutes or data off your plan for every phone on it, just your phones on your plan. Otherwise you would be feeding the neighbors for free. It does make sense, because regardless of whether its over the network extender or over the tower your still using minutes on your plan.

Man i hope a T1 will feed more than one blackberry, if not you guys need to stop downloading pron on the phone... LOL.. I know though its seriously slow by today's standards. I have 20Mb cable service and thats not even the fastest offered just what i can afford.
