11 year old shack photo

I recently found an old polaroid of one of my old shacks. I thought I'd share it. I think it's around 1998. It was in the basement of my old house. The white map on the wall was for county hunting and when I confirmed it I blacked it out, that's why it's odd looking. As far as some of the equipment goes there are some oldies but goodies, which I no longer have. There is no photo of the antennas. Although I think I had a discone an an AR-270 and an inverted v and maybe a wire or two strung out.

How about my 1953 Shack in Arlington, Mass?? ;-)

My first general shack - in the attic of our home in Arlington, Bob.. ;-)

TBS50D (Harvey-wells - made in Southhampton, MA (?) ) and Rcvr was a Hallicrafters SX-28A.

Old "Battery-Eliminator" from the 30's used as test Power supply. Still have the "Bug" - Wish I had that Dynamic BC Mike still.. :)

It doesn't seem like an old shack if there are programmable scanners with LCD displays and computers! Even if it isn't all that old it looked like you did a great job with it.

The 1953 shack is somewhat old and Tom, I don't know what you look like now but you were a cute kid in 1953! I really like the Buck Rogers looking microphone. I was just beginning to think about ham radio then, even though I was only 2 years old in 1953. .

Seriously, I wish I a picture of my first radio, a crystal set I built myself in 1962. It never needed batteries or 120. Pretty high tech I would say.

1953..

Yep - Used to woo the (few) girl-nerds middlin'-good.. :))) - I had Polio in 1946 and in 1951, my Uncle (W1FWK) gave me an Echophone EC-1 receiver (http://www.qsl.net/la5ki/big/ec1.jpg) and I cruised the bands, finally learning the code and getting my Novice ticket in 1952 with a single ARRL 6L6 rig with a War surplus 3725(?) Kc/s FT-243 Crystal on a wooden chassis and bellwire coil similar to: http://wa5tcz.com/wa5tcz_Images/100_0955_6L6-transmitter.jpg .- followed by my General and 2nd Phone Commercial license w/RADAR endorsement in 1953 , at the time, supposedly the youngest one in the country, now sporting an SX28 (http://www.rigpix.com/hallicrafter/sx28.jpg) and (http://www.radioblvd.com/SX28Notes.html) receiver and that TBS50D - as seen in the photo. (http://www.rigpix.com/harveywells/harveywells_tbs50d.jpg ) - Many moons later had this 6' high dual-diversity receiver in 60's: (

Here's a better idea of what that 300 pound receiver looked like:

http://www.pixtoshare.net/anfrr3a.jpg

You changed to each of the 8 channels by dialing the channel number (1-8) on that rotary dial and the whole thing burst into whirring and clacking noises and blinking lights until it settled down on the new channel! :)

Gawd, I miss it!! :)

Each channel had to have been set up individually first - a laborious job! :)

Tom, thanks for sharing this and providing links that are also very interesting. What a great tradition of ham radio you have in your family. You had Elmers by birth right!
