Sometime before the end of October Vilas County switched to digital. Lac du Flambeau cops switched shortly thereafter. Can't remember if Oneida County switched before or after Vilas but I think it was after. Minocqua cops are still on analog and somewhat interesting (when they're working <smirk>). Don't think they have plans to switch over and eventually might be eliminating dispatch altogether if Oneida County will take over dispatch for them. Vilas has been working to coordinate with Oneida as a backup system if either one goes down. Fire, ambulance, hospitals, public works and such are all analog.

Vilas County Digital Migration vs Milwaukee Co Digital Migration Costs

Thanks for the info. Cant believe they would do that before someone like Milw or Wauk county . Do you have the new Freq?? Or where can I get them seeing RR doesnt show them yet..

Well, I can't speak for WSKH Co, but I CAN speak for Milwaukee Co. We got no funds from the PSIC grant, all of it went to the state for the statewide system. That backbone is going up around the state for a statewide, P25 system. For Milwaukee County to go digital is $20,000,000+. It's not even in proportion, my friend.

Both our counties in SE Wis have digital migration plans, but expect it to take several years of UASI Homeland Security grants because neither of us are benefiting from the $45m WI PSIC grant. With the number of subscriber units, those costs skyrocket. Milwaukee County agencies have over 6000 subscribers, which the bottom of the line digital replacement are about $3000/each. That's $18,000,000 just on the subscriber side. The infrastructure side is at least $8,000,000 to complete the migration. We are probably $3-5 million invested toward this already - so there's the $20+million we still have to go.

A VHF radio is roughly $600. Vilas County probably has 300 at the MOST when you combine Police, Fire, Paramedics, etc. They probably can get by with 2-3 tower sites (vs our 9). Now consider that the State of Wi is paying for their tower site implementation. (The statewide backbone is VHF, not 800 mhz) That leaves them with no more than the subscribers to replace....See why they can afford to do it and we can't????

Where is someone getting a VHF P25 radio for $600? Analog, maybe...but not a new P25-capable radio. Even most mid- or high-tier analog narrowband VHF radios are above the $600 mark, even on large purchase orders.

You are right that once these rural counties buy the new VHF radios, for them to be interoperable with a proposed statewide system is no problem...spend the money for a new programming template and reprograming and they are done.

yeah, your basic Motorola XTS5000 portable is $1500-$2000 refurbished. New portables your talking $3000-$4000 a piece and mobiles more than double that! If you can get me one for $600, I'll take two!

Not sure if I'm reading you right, but are you saying the state pays for Vilas towers? I know for a fact the new one going up in Lac du Flambeau is paid with local tax dollars. Vilas partnered with LdF and is kicking in approx. $200,000 to LdF's $100,000. The state didn't kick in anything. The town is leasing the site to the county for I think $1.00 per year. Vilas owns a few towers and leases on private towers. As of May 2008, I found 8 towers listed in the Vilas County public meeting minutes of the Communications Committee. I think there are more towers than that tho. To keep updated on info, I read the minutes of these meeting which are usually posted within a month of when it's held.

It doesn't make any sense to me either.

It has been brought to my attention there were several errors in my posting and, being the fair person that I am, I'm going to state them here:

- The PSIC money (most of it) is going to the statewide system, not to the state.
- WI got $15.3M in PSIC grant funds, not 45.
- The State of WI is not paying for Vilas County's towers. Vilas' project was started before the statewide system and is independant of it.

I stand corrected.

In an effort to make a point about why Milwaukee County hadn't completed a digital migration (finances), I made some unfortunate comments (mistakes) that have been brought to my attention.

It's clear to me now that I should keep to Milwaukee County radio - which I promise to do from this point forward. I stand corrected again.
