A VHF radio is roughly $600. Vilas County probably has 300 at the MOST when you combine Police, Fire, Paramedics, etc. They probably can get by with 2-3 tower sites (vs our 9). Now consider that the State of Wi is paying for their tower site implementation. (The statewide backbone is VHF, not 800 mhz) That leaves them with no more than the subscribers to replace....See why they can afford to do it and we can't????

I know for a fact the new one going up in Lac du Flambeau is paid with local tax dollars. Vilas partnered with LdF and is kicking in approx. $200,000 to LdF's $100,000. The state didn't kick in anything. The town is leasing the site to the county for I think $1.00 per year. Vilas owns a few towers and leases on private towers. As of May 2008, I found 8 towers listed in the Vilas County public meeting minutes of the Communications Committee. I think there are more towers than that tho. To keep updated on info, I read the minutes of these meeting which are usually posted within a month of when it's held.
