A lengthy article in today's Richmond newspaper confirms what has been rumored for the past few years. Due to budget cuts and reduction in federal grants VASCAR is being abandoned by the VSP as no longer being "cost effective". Started in 2000 VSP has mostly abandoned regular patrols since 2007. One "mission" was flown last year, 4 in 2010, 0 in 2009 and 1 in 2008.

Don't expect removals of the VASCAR "welcome" signs. They probably will remain as a visual deterrent to speeders. VDOT also can save some money by not having to repaint the appropriate road's white timing markers.

hahaha still gotta watch em around emporia tho but you can at least have a little opened fun now with out wondering is there a plane watching me... i thought that was it just had to make sure lol

A VASCAR unit couples a stopwatch with a simple computer. An operator records the moment that a vehicle passes two fixed objects (such as a white circle or square painted on the carriageway) that are a known distance apart. The vehicle's average speed is then calculated by dividing the distance by the time. By applying the mean value theorem, we can deduce that the vehicle's speed must equal its average speed at some time between the measurements.

This technique can also be used to determine a vehicle's speed from helicopters and other aerial platforms, making it easier to secure a conviction.

A 1991 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that VASCAR-plus units produced errors of less than 2 mph if used correctly.[4]:xiii
