To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just bought a Vertex Standard VX-2200 and I am trying to program it. However I am unable to get it to communicate. And after a couple of tries my PC will reboot for no reason. The Software, Cable, and radio all came from the same place from ebay. On my cable On one end I have a RS232 plug and the other side has the RJ45 plug and a 3.5 audio jack. I am also using a usb to serial adapter. Any input would be great.

I had v3.00 and now updated to the one you mentioned 3.01 with the same results. with the radio on I click upload a window pops up says to turn on the radio however the radio is on. Then the radio switches from vertex on the radio to selftest and back and forth. It will also beep like you just turned it on.

Ok found the program issue as it was the generic cable. I bought the Vertex Standard usb cable and now it all works as it should.

Now I am trying to set it up to scan. I have three groups one for MURS, one for marine channels and the third for scanning fire and police channels. I want to set it up to scan the third group when I don't need to use the first two groups.

Now I have set the key function to scan but it doesn't appear to do anything when I push the button. Is there a "how to" to give a few steps to program it.

Is the mike grounded (in its clip)?
Have you included the frequencies in the scan group?
Does the display show "scan" on the radio when you press the scan button?

The mic being grounded option is disabled. Also the frequencies are all checked in the SC column. And the SCAN doesn't appear on the radio. Normally when I push a button it will beep however when I push the programmed scan button there is no beep.

Thanks Dave

Ok I misread one of the labels, the mic in clip disabled doesn't exist when I look for it. However when I ground the mic it will scan as it should. Thanks for the heads up. Greatly appreciate the help.

I have found the best way to learn is to use the F1 button as you are programming, every field has context sensitive help if you put your mouse cursor in the field and then press F1 you will get an explanation of the feature.

+1 on the mic being grounded, that screwed me up for a couple days until somebody here posted that answer. There is a menu setting under "Common/Miscellaneous" for "off hook signalling" that will keep the ctcss working with the mic off the ground and probably will enable your scan as well.

Great input greatly appreciate it. I also found the tabs to enable mic off hook scan. Now it will scan like I want it to.

Thanks
