• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Read the info carefully.

Yes, no MONTHLY fee. But you do pay $50 a year per radio according to their current rates. That price could easily change. First year is included in the purchase price.

"Unlimited range" as long as you are in the footprint of the cellular network. These run on LTE Internet of Things type service. It's just voice over IP on cellular. Unlimited is also restricted to the USA. Outside the USA you'll need to pay extra for an international plan. Not all countries/carriers use the same cellular bands, so no guarantee the "radio" will work.

Cheap Chinese cellular product, although their website makes a big deal telling you they are shipped from the USA.

No more/less reliable than the cellular network. Only thing going for them is they seem to have SIM's that work on more than one carrier.

If you already own a cell phone, just get one of the existing walkie talkie apps like Zello.

I almost took the bait on those Rapid Radios. Found the You Tube clip that shows how they work.
Not a real big deal for $400.00 plus $50.00 a year.
I due miss Nextel those phones worked great. Talked to my daughter from LA to Boston like she was in the same room. Used them at work came in very handy.

From their website:
With the on-going crisis in the Middle East & Europe, the threat of Cyberattacks on the USA, and the uncertainty of WW3 you simply CAN NOT RELY on Cell Phones and Internet for Communications in the Future!
This is bad faith hype, IMO. While these devices are not technically "cell phones" they use the LTE data frequencies which are part of the cell network. We use LTE data in mobile modem/routers in vehicle telemetry systems that my employer develops.

Their fine print:
Nationwide coverage available when in range of LTE tower.

As someone above said, if you already have cells phones, you may as well use Zello, which is free. If you like the feel of a PTT mic, there are Bluetooth speaker-mics out there available for cell phones that support Zello.

Reminder for those considering this product.... when the Boston bombings happened, the Feds killed the cell network in that area in such a way that you could only call 911 and no data moved over the cell network. We had a bunch of customers on cell based tablets and equipment. We had to rapidly deploy temporary 2 way radio systems to support them until the feds released the cell system back to normal use. TT

False Rumors - the system was overloaded, never shut down, nor did anyone ask for the networks to be shut down

Sorry ECPS, I am going to respectfully disagree. I have been in the middle of many overloaded cell systems from concerts, parades, and natural disasters. The subscriber behavior is very predictable. The system is predictable. What was happening after the BB was a system level change. It behaved that way 24/7 and I watched the behavior of the RF spectrum and devices. Definitely not overloaded in the middle of the night. I know you are likely a WPS and GETS guy, so you are likely connected to those who would know. I am sharing what I saw from a system performance perspective. TT
