Has anyone been hearing a warning sound in the background of a dispatchers radio room that sounds like the RED ALERT warning sound on the old STAR-TREK series. What is that??

Yup. !

Unfortunately it's called a Fire-Alarm system and even at a Police or Fire Station that are known to trip.

I hear this in Lincoln, Nebraska frequently. In this case, it is related to the MDTs used in the patrol cars, and either an incoming message or a status change message.

If this is a Moto trunked system, if someeone hits the "emergency" button on the radio (provided it has been programmed for this feature) the alert will indicate on the console with the audible sound you describe. Other vendors may behave in a similar fashion.

I think you are probably correct. I hear it mostly with the Kentucky State Police which is a Motorola Astro P25 system. Troopers do have an emergency button on their radios and most of the time they bump it by accident.

Doesn't have to be a Trunked system to have the Alarms for "Emergency" buttons, many conventional repeater and simplex systems also have that feature..

If you listen closely, you will hear all kinds of sound effects in radio transmissions. It is possible that it could be the duress alarm on police radios, however I stand by my thoughts that it is MDT related. I've heard the Star Trek phasers sound, the red alert as already mentioned, the sound made when Kirk says "beam me up Scottie," and many other Star Trek sounds. I think some Star Trek geek probably loaded up the MDT OS with these sounds, as I have heard these same sounds on other systems in the country.

Just a hunch.

ISP dispatch and some local dispatch centers have a siren sound often in the background, that's 911 calls ringing in...

So that could be what you're hearing if it's happening often.

Could also be the dispatchers IDACS / NCIC terminal alarm indicating a hit on the record that a officer ran thru dispatch

While cad systems, phone lines and other dispatch center equipment can certainly make this sound... IDACS/NCIC (OMNIXX as indiana's system is called) makes this sound when there is a wanted item return when we run someone, this is the most likely cause as nearly every center in the state has this software...

Bing Bing Bing !!! We have a winner!!! It is the IDACS/NCIC system when dispatchers run wanted checks on a person. The phone ring sound is the car MDT when they are messaging.

I've read (on here before) that it is the IDACS/NCIC system indicating that the person is wanted.

I know that for our county, it is not a phone ringing (911 calls don't go to this station), it's not the emergency button (wrong dispatch station), and it's not the MDT (we don't have any).

The Attached File is an example of the sound that I hear when a Police Officer presses the emergency button on his/her radio, and the Radio sends an MDC Emergency packet, then the Dispatch Computer automatically sends a MDC Emergency ACK packet to let the radio that sent the emergency that the emergency was received. It then has the Officer's Radio transmit constant for about 30 seconds or so. If the dispatcher wants to talk to other units, she can override his transmission (it is a repeater system).

In this clip she is trying to get the status of the officer that hit the emergency button. It is somewhat pointless because his radio is transmitting automatically and he/she couldn't hear the dispatcher talking, unless the officer was in his car and hit the emergency button on his portable (he then could hear the dispatcher on his mobile), or he hit the mobile emergency button and could hear it on his portable. But it does make sense, because if he doesn't respond on another radio, that means either it was accidental and he didn't know he hit it or it is a true emergency.

You can hear the alarm in the background that the dispatchers hear when an emergency is received. This is after she tried to make contact with the officer that initiated the emergency alarm, but was not able to. So far, for as long as I have been listening (almost 2 years), they have always been accidental in my town.

Good audio clip. She almost sounds like shes not too worried about it.

almost like... "...when you guys are done with lunch, Bobby might need some help..."

Ya, usually because it is false, and she heard the 20 seconds of audio that was nothing but mostly silence. lol And she has been with the Munster PD for a while, so they are supposed to be calm.

If you want I can put the whole clip up, as she tries to get an officer to respond to his location, but nobody is responding at first and it is just silence when she tries to get a unit. Then it seems at the end, 19 is frustrated because i think he was trying to talk and everybody was walking over him or his radio was still in "emergency". :) He has hit his emergency like 3 times in a few months. :D

I know this is off topic, but we are getting new PD Cars! Here are the current ones (along with some Tahoes)

New ones (Slow transition):

EDIT: Here is the Full Audio Clip! :)

That noise in the background.. sounds more like he hit the red button on the radio that sent out an emergency ... yeah

I think the LAPD dispatches are more of the "not worried about it" and they sound so.. mono! but mmm this dispatcher... she is just... idk how to say.. just chilling and sitting behind the screen

Which Audio clip are u listening to. If you are listening to the one that is like a few seconds long, that is just what the computer terminals sound that they make at the dispatchers computer when they hit the button.

If you are listening to the one I just posed (longer), the noise at the very beginning (MDC) is the emergency sent out.

and about the dispatcher, i thought she was calm, but you can tell she is a little tense. It was because he happened to hit it during his traffic stop, which would make it more of a chance of being real (Listen to longer clip).
